"'Once Upon' is primarily about ego. The image is meant to convey a message about how the ego allows us to become 'wrapped-up' in ourselves on occasion. The figure points at himself as he places himself joyfully (as he leaps) upon a pedestal. He has a green feather in his protective helmet. The feather represents the envy/ jealousy that often drives a fragile ego to the brink of self-appointed status. His garments are mostly made up of military style. (This indicates the strength & discipline required to manage self-exertion). The figure is faceless, to indicate the inability of others to truly 'see' the person behind the ego. The rest of the garment was given simply to show creativity/uniqueness of such individuals. The tubes that protrude from the head gear, represent the need for oxygen as the figure becomes smothered by his own self ". Jo-Ellen's inspiration came from witnessing others experience their own ego, and her own direct inner conflicts as well.

"It's funny. This work is about ego, and now? There's an award for it! That's okay, 'cause it's also about Human Nature!" ;)
