Thomas Johnson Wins Final vs. Crestwood

Jayvee: Thomas Johnson 35, Crestwood 32

Before a full house of raucous fans, from both schools , the #1 seeded Crestwood Cavaliers faced off against the #2 seeded Thomas Johnson Patriots. The game that was played Monday night will not soon be forgotten for those in attendance. The Patriots jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead with Maria Rivera getting the game off with a bang hitting a 3 pointer, but it did not last very long as a strong inside game was played by the Cavaliers Taylor Johnson who led all scorers with 16 pts. Crestwood stormed back to take a 10-7 1st qtr lead with Taylor Johnson scoring 8 of those points. Thomas Johnson was able to stop Johnson during the 2nd qtr limiting her to only 2 pts of Crestwood’s 8, Alexandra Fossett pumped in 4 pts. while Thomas Johnson countered with 15 pts on the hot hand of Kayla Holman. A few quick steals by TJ’s Jordan Pitts, Natalie Galaviz and Holman led to break away lay ups near the end of the 2nd qtr. giving Thomas Johnson a precarious 4 pt half-time lead.
The 3rd quarter had both defenses playing strong as Thomas Johnson only gave up one FG from the floor, again it was Taylor Johnson for Crestwood. Thomas Johnson made only 3 baskets in the quarter as Rylee Ely came off the bench to hit a clutch turnaround jumper and Kayla Holman added another bucket, but the big play came from TJ’s point guard, Jaclyn Pisarski, when she hit a long 3 pointer to give, what seemed like at the time, some breathing room to the Patriots at 29-20.
The 4th quarter started well for Thomas Johnson when they extended their lead to 33-20 with another basket from Rivera, and timely free throw shooting from TJ points leader(9) Natalie Galaviz. There were still over 4 minutes to play and the Cavaliers did not win 15 games this year by giving up. After TJ’s point guard, Pisarski, left the game with an injury Crestwood put on full court pressure and the Patriots stumbled giving up 12 unanswered points as Crestwood’s Tori Jones made some quick steals and easy lay ups. The score was 33-32 with under 2 minutes to play. Pisarski came back into the game and after some possession changes with no scoring TJ had the ball as the clocked now clicked down under a minute. With time running out and TJ furiously passing the ball to kill the clock and Crestwood chasing to foul someone, TJ’s Danielle Cook made a bold and gutsy decision. She squared to the basket and let fly a high arcing shot that seemed to stay airborne forever. It finally pierced the cylinder hitting nothing but twine. At 35-32 Crestwood still had life with about 17 seconds to play. The Cavaliers hustled down court as the Patriots applied pressure trying to defend the game tying 3 point attempt. Crestwood’s shot missed and TJ rebounded and was quickly, and smartly, fouled. With 3 seconds remaining TJ missed the front end of the 1 and 1 but there was just not enough time left for the Cavaliers to get close enough for the game tying shot as time expired. Lyric Forney and Sofia Villacij each added 2 pts a piece for Crestwood
Every player who played in this game should be proud of themselves.
