Congradulations to All our Winners!

Coaches, Coordinators, Players and Parents

Here are the Seedings for this weekends tournaments. Six ties were broken by head to head wins and losses followed by a "coin toss" (actually assigning numbers and picking them randomly). If there is a major mistake in the seeding let me know.

Please Circulate/Communicate to all coaches, varsity and jayvee. This is now on the web page, Tournament Schedule, and any mistakes are mine, not Todd's. Thanks for all your patience and understanding and good luck in the tournaments.

With one exception (a game that has no bearing on standings), all games are completed. As quickly as possible, please send your results to Todd. If you know from the web site that games have been played but the results haven't been reported, please send them to Todd whether you were the home team or the visitor. If there are mistakes in the results, please alert Todd.

Thanks very much for helping us work this out.

Jim Shannon

Coordinators and Coaches

Into the New Year and the second part of the season and things are going well. Good competition, very little rescheduling and very few complaints. Some surprises about who's at the top of their divisions and who's at the bottom but there is plenty of time for that to change. There are a few observations worth passing on to you;
Some of the focus for the officials this year has been on uniforms. The officials have been turned into the fashion police which they hate as much as we do. Enforcing these rules has caused some friction but the girls are going to see the same rules in high school and more closely enforceded at that. Jewelry has never been allowed. There are no earrings, barrettes or necklaces to be worn. Having their ears pierced the day before a game isn't an excuse for girls to be allowed to play. Scrunchies or wristbands...they can be black, white or the predominant color of the uniform but every girl needs to have the same color. Technical point but if the official enforces it, there's no argument.
Games need to start on time. Waiting for five girls to come from a volleyball tournament is not a reason to delay a game twenty minutes. It doesn't happen that way in high school. Varsity girls should get fifteen minutes warm-up between games and I am asking the Washington County refs to help us out on this.
Score tables should be manned by adults. Many kids are better than some adults at keeping score and time but no kid needs to have parents screaming at him or her for letting the clock run or putting up the wrong score. No volunteer should have to put up with this either but we can't put young boys or girls out there. Just as bad as that have been scorekeepers and timers (adults) who argue with and question officials and are totally biased as opposed to being part of an officiating team.
If these situations have occurred in your shop, please give some thought about correcting them and a return to a focus on girls playing basketball. We're doing a good job but we can do a little better on occasion.
If other changes need to be made, please let me know. Thanks for all you do.

Note: Linganore has a new location for home games, Linganore/Oakdale High School (L/OHS). Please click the "Directions to the Games" to the right. Thanks!

The Washington County officials have offered an evening clinic for coaches if there are numbers. There have been a few responses but not enough to go through with it and time is getting short.

Also the Directory, which is pretty much up to date. It can be changed/updated as needed. One big item for the meeting was the election of new officers. Please give some consideration to this and feel free to nominate individuals or groups to be involved in the administration of the League.

Thanks for all you do.

Jim Shannon

Notes to: Directors, Coaches, Parents and Players.

One, if your player must wear a t-shirt under their jersey it must match the dominant color. Example if home teams dominant color for that game is white you must have a white t-shirt, if your away dominant color is teal you must have a teal colored t-shirt.

Two, your scorebook will be filled out and ready 10 minutes prior to start of game, no excuses. Also, Do not use the numbers from the web page they could be wrong! Please check and compare with opposing team before official book is signed by the officials.

Three, we follow the Maryland High School Girls Basketball Rules and Mid-Maryland Girls Basketball have some exceptions to these rules (Home Page of Web, MM Rules Summary). Coaches need to know all rules and exceptions in order to serve their players best. Officials are not going to ignore rules and will intervene. As coaches and coordinators we also have an obligation to learn and understand the basic rules under which our players must play. Please know the rules or ask before the start of games. This will help avoid any conflict during the season.

Four, Please show up 30 minutes prior to your specified game time. All of the home teams only have gyms rented for specific times. We are also having problems with food in the High School Gyms. No Food and Drinks in Gyms, unless otherwise noted. Thank You, your Web Master.

Five, I need your assistance in some aspects of your game reports. As stated previously, the home team is required to file game summaries/scores after each game. The league is only as good as our web site, so please try to file more concise scores and game recap information.
These recaps are important for the players and their parents to see online, but they are the most time-consuming of the web updates that we have to make. The closer we get them to straight "copy/paste", the better. So here are a few requests that will save time and keep the page consistent:
- report the first and last names of players. They are all listed on the online rosters and it only takes you a minute to look them up rather than me having to do it for every game reported. Last names only are rude. I don't particularly like being called "Shannon" and it sure isn't proper for a 13-14 year-old.
- write out all "numbers" less than 10 - i.e. seven, eight, etc.
- use upper and lower case, no ALL CAPS.
- and some are still providing no details (scoring or otherwise) for the opposing team. This is totally unacceptable and unsportsmanlike. We need final scores, game highlights (if possible) and high scorers and/or rebounders for both teams. This is for the kids, so provide as much info as you can within reason, and please use proper grammar!
Finally, please coordinate your reports so that both game summaries/scores come to us on the same email. Our webmaster spent five hours going through all of the reports and coordinating which reports were missing. This is an unnecessary waste of time for someone who is a volunteer. We will be looking for a new web master if we cannot coordinate the submittals of our game summaries/scores.
Some of you are doing an excellent job and We appreciate that, as do the players and parents. For those that can take an extra minute or so to sharpen up their reports, please do so. It makes a huge difference.

Again "Welcome" and lets make this a safe and an enjoyable season for all.
