Knowing is piece about self-worth. The work is dedicated
to my mother, who is 'knowing'. I chose to paint dancers,
especially ballet, because it is an art-form that requires
intense dedication if one wishes to be successful at it.
The women are on a balcony during a break from rehearsal.
Dis-shoveled hair and enlarged veins are sure signs
that they have just completed an intense 'work-out'. In
actuality, this represents how very hard they are all
working towards a goal.(a goal that requires dedication).
Yet, four of the five women are trying vigorously to
capture the attentions of someone or something off in
the distance.(this 'something' is not presented on the
canvas, because it represents anything that isn't 'worthy'
of being captured, otherwise known as the many
distractions of life). Hence, the four women represent
the majority of people who often make folie of themselves
for the attention/acceptance of others, even after working
so very hard for something to call their own. Meanwhile,
the woman in red smiles 'knowingly' at the viewer. She
is amused by the foolish nature of her comrades, and
their willingness to gain the acceptance of another at
their own expense. The woman in red represents the
inner strength of those individuals who are true to
themselves, and their self-worth. 'Knowing' is actually
the woman in red. Thus, the woman in red is my mother
(interpreted from earlier photographs). The term 'Knowing'
is one that she often used/uses when something is
blatantly obvious, and nobody else seems to notice
that's so. She was never a ballet dancer. Yet, she has
always been 'Knowing'." This is Jo-Ellen's explanation
of her inspiration for 'Knowing'.
