April
Nature Photography by James Purnell
The Blanche Ames Gallery features an eastern shore student, James Purnell, during April. James
Purnell will graduate from the Benedictine School this year. As
his Artist's Statement indicates, he is certainly enthused about taking
pictures! James Purnell's Artist’s Statement: "I
have a big love for nature. Turning nature into a still capture with my
camera is what just fascinates me. I love going out in the fields and
woods with my camera. It is a challenge, that’s what makes it fun. It
is fun because you have to go looking for things or some times they
come to you. It is a challenge because you have to be ready at all
times or most of the time you will not capture the moment. It is also
very peaceful outside with nature." You are invited to join the artist in the gallery and in room 113 on Sunday, April 6, between 12:30 and 2 P.M. when we will welcome you for conversation and light fare at the reception. | |
| The Blanche Ames Gallery is located
in The Unitarian Universalist Congregation church
off highway 15/340. Take the Mt Zion exit and turn right onto Elmer
Derr Road. The Unitarian Universalist Congregation church is about a
one mile drive from the exit at 4880 Elmer Derr Road. Please call the
church office (301-473-7680) for further directions and weekday gallery
hours. |

| The
Artists’ Gallery |
| March 2008 | Two artists will be featured in the Artists' Gallery during March.
Intimate Views, by Belgian artist Johan Lowie.
Intimate Views,
a view of everyday life seen through the eyes of a painter. The exhibit
depicts the hidden world of the towns, of lives behind closed doors:
the mood of a moment, lost in the struggle for existence. Johan
Lowie’s works focus on the human drama, capturing stories and emotions.
Lowie portrays the tales of sorrow or euphoria, the theater of life in
a light of color and composition. At a young age Lowie was
inspired by Flemish expressionism. He went on to study classical art at
academies of Ieper & Ghent and the Institute for the Plastic Arts
in Kortrijk, in Belgium.
Framework, by Linda Agar-Hendrix
Framework
features chain saw blades and clay floral corollas, along with copper
armatures metaphorically setting the stage for blossoming ideas and
forms. The artist describes her work as ceramic sculpture.
Crusty, low-fire glazes add interesting texture to the matte surfaces
of many pieces. Matte and multicolored surfaces with copper interior
elements add green oxidation. Other metal/clay pieces are created using
rusted found objects in a junkyard giving the opportunity to express
renewal and new directions. Exploring these new directions led
Agar-Hendrix to produce an outcome such as chain saw chain covered with
petals and corollas. Shell or pod-like forms, ceramics with a metal
armature, or “framework”, may be viewed as vessels or an abstract
organic form that appears to be in bloom. Linda Agar-Hendrix,
originally from the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts, studied and
worked in France for a number of years before moving to Maryland 25
years ago.
Both shows will be on display at the Artists’ Gallery in Frederick, MD March 1-30, 2008. The opening reception is Saturday, March 1st, 5 – 9 P.M. The opening reception coincides with the Downtown Frederick Partnership’s First Saturday Gallery Walk.
| | April 2008 | 7th Annual Box Show and Silent Auction
The Artists Gallery presents the "7th Annual Box Show and Silent Auction". Discover how "unsquare" a box can be! The exhibit and auction runs April 4 through April 26 with an opening reception Saturday April 5th, 5 - 9 P.M. at The Artists' Gallery in Frederick, Maryland. A closing reception and last chance to place a bid is April 26, 5 - 8 P.M. This annual event is an important fundraiser as it helps to keep this coop of local and regional artists in business.
Member artists along with guest artists are each given a wooden cube
with one open end. Regardless of the artist's expertise, whether a
painter or sculptor or something else entirely, the boxes are
transformed into an often surprising treasure - an end product one
might not think a box could be. Opening bids start very low. Without a
doubt one of the best art bargains to be had for anyone who'd like an
original and unique work of art. The rules have never set any
limits or constraints - nor do they this time, save one. The artist is
free to create in the direction of his or her imagination, but must
begin with the concept of a wooden box.
Past examples included
a gallery member who burned her box and used the ashes to make a glaze
for a ceramic piece. There have been bird houses, fish bowls,
peep-hole cameras, electronic visual and audio boxes. It is an
extraordinary display of what artists can do once they're turned loose
with no restrictions.
Featured artists include: Palma
Allen, Janet Belich, Joy Boudreaux, Lesa Cook, Steven Dobbin,
Nina Chung Dwyer, James Germaux, Christine Hahn, Linda Agar-Hendrix ,
Phyllis Jacobs, Regina Kaiktsian, Jan McIntyre-Lamb, Johan Lowie,

Santarella, Robert Sibbison, Irina Smulevitch, Shelly Stevens, Chris
Stovall and Washington White. | The Artists' Gallery
is a cooperative of artists located at 4 E. Church St. Frederick, MD
21701. Gallery hours: Friday - Sunday 12-5 P.M. Call 301.696.8187 or
visit the gallery website at www.the-artists-gallery.org.
