VARSITY "AA" QUARTERFINALS: TOP FOUR SEEDS ADVANCE TO SEMIFINALS - 03/01/08

Urbana 60 - Linganore 38. In a fast paced game, Urbana was able to pull away in the 2nd and 3rd quarters on their way to a 60-38 win. Five Hawks were in double figures led by Kyler Rose with 14 points. Thomas Utt had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds and James Jaworski had 11 points and 8 rebounds. Chris DiScuillo chipped in 11 points and had 4 steals and Matt Lane had 10 point to go with his 5 assists. The Lancers were led by Steven Washabaugh with 9 point and Ryan Hall with 7 points. Matt Freibaum and Branden Bruning each had 5 points a piece.

In another low scoring, defensive battle between the Cadets and the Mustangs, West Frederick Varsity edged Monocacy 34-30 to gain a spot in the semi-finals. The Cadets combined solid defense and balanced scoring to gain the victory. They were led by Nigel Fender with eight, Ryan Kennedy with seven, and Connor Corbitt and Theo Remy with six each. Tony Dowdy led Monocacy with thirteen and strong inside play. James Harris added six for the Mustangs.

Walkersville jumped out to a 9-3 lead at the end of the 1st quarter and the Bulldogs answered back by going on a 18-5 run in the second quarter to take the lead 21-14 at the half. Third quarter was a low scoring quarter only nine points scored between the two teams. The Bulldogs won the game 38-27. Game high scorer was the Bulldogs Mark Hoy with 15 points, which 13 of his 15 came in the 2nd quarter. Walkersville was led by Jacob Miller who had nine points.

VARSITY "A" QUARTERFINALS: #1 THRU #4 SEEDS MOVE ON TO FINAL FOUR - 03/01/08

Number 1 seed Glenwood varsity defeated St. John’s 58-19 to advance to a second round tournament matchup with Brunswick. Glenwood took control early jumping out to a 7 point lead at the end of the first quarter and extending that to 20 points at the half. St. John’s fought hard but had difficulty against Glenwood’s half court man to man defense. Glenwood was led by Troy Spurrier with 16 points. Paul Harris and Anthony Arnette each added 8 points for the winners. St. John’s was led by Robert Conova and Jackson Eskay who each had 4 points.

FQMS played very tough defense in defeating MSD 55 - 36. FQMS created numerous turnovers in the 1st quarter jumping to a 15 - 6 lead. They continue to apply the pressure and had a 34 - 16 lead at the half. MSD came out in the 3rd quarter and got back in the game; at one point they cut the lead to 11 points but FQMS pressure defense delivered the final margin of victory. FQMS had a well balanced offense led by Evan Richardson with 16 points while Michael Nicastro added 11. MSD's Jesse Steingieser had a good all around game ending with 15 points with Zack Barron adding 9.

At the end of the first quarter Mt.Airy was ahead by 2, leading 10-8. Going into half time Mt.Airy led 23-16. When Catoctin came out after half they took a 17 to 7 run and led going into the fourth quarter, 33-30. In the fourth quarter Mt.Airy trailed by 8 with 4:00 minutes left to play. The bulldogs made a come back to take the game into overtime with the score, 41-41. The overtime period was won by Mt.Airy who hit 7 of their 10 foul shots to win the game 48-41. Catoctin leading scorers were Harlan Lawson and Garrett Sprankle both with 10. Mt.Airy leading scorer was Gavin McTavish with 17 and Ryan Tate with 14.

Blaine Price hit a shot with 2 seconds left on the clock to seal the victory for Brunswick over Oakdale, 42-40. Brunswick led by as many as 16 points in the first half but could never put Oakdale away. Juan Retana had a fabulous game for Oakdale both offensively and defensively. He led all scorers with 24 points. Ian Fisher’s 21 kept Brunswick in the game. Brunswick led 13-5 after one quarter. At the half Brunswick led 25-19. It was 31-28 after three. Oakdale took their first lead 37-36 before Brunswick sealed the victory.

JAYVEE "AA" QUARTERFINALS: BALLENGER CREEK UPSETS #3 SEED, OTHERS IN TOP FOUR ADVANCE - 03/01/08

Monocacy Mustangs the Number one seed, jumped to a nine-point lead after the first quarter and never trailed against Middletown Knights. Carney Benard of the Mustangs led all scorers with 24 points, including 15 in the first half. Michael Kalamets scored 11 points for Middletown knights.

Urbana 40 West Frederick 31. Urbana JV was able to pull out a win against a tough playing West Frederick team. Urbana was led from Zach Thomas with 13 points and great play on both sides of the court. Jonah Loveless chipped in with eight points. West Frederick was led by Michael Tetteh who finished with nine points. Urbana took a 24 - 10 lead into the locker room at the half. West Frederick cut the lead to five in the fourth, but Urbana kept it's composure and pulled out the win.

Ballenger Creek pulled away from the Windsor Knolls in the 4th quarter-outscoring them 19 to 6 in route to a 45-34 victory. The Bulldogs big man Tommy Tran came up big-scoring 15 points and controlling the boards. Andy Shannon had a great game scoring 11 and Ryan Grant ran the pick and roll the offense to perfection and scored 9 including 7 in the deciding 4th quarter. Joseph Finley chipped in with 6. The Hawks finished an outstanding season with a record of 14 wins and 5 losses and were led by Isaac Apea with 11, Charlie Norris with 7 and Kyle Singer with 6.

JAYVEE "A" QUARTERFINALS: SEEDING HOLDS TRUE AS TOP FOUR MAKE IT TO SEMIFINAL ROUND - 03/01/08

Glenwood jayvee cruised into the semi-final round by defeating a very game St. John's team 71 to 15 at Glenelg High School. The combination of Glenwood's fast break and size advantage led to numerous scoring opportunities. The Cobra's, rotating all 12 players evenly had a very balanced scoring night. All twelve scored led by 7th graders Tomi Fairan with 11 and Colin Randle with 10. Following them were 6th graders L.J. Finney and Mikey Wynne with 8 each. Scoring for St. John's was William Eskay with 4, Jacob Bernstein with 3, Bryan Thompson, Ryan Sonn, and Alex Siegert with 2 each and Zach Roskowinsky and David Larson had 1 each.

Folly Quarter JV beat Mt. Airy 29-18. Mt. Airy came to play in the first half of the game building a 1 point lead at halftime. But, Folly Quarter led by a stifling defense in the second half limited Mt. Airy to 5 points. Folly Quarter was led by Ryan Doyle who scored 8 of his 10 points in the second half. Also Jack Cook, John Kum and Austin Altman scored 6, 5, and 5 points respectively for Folly Quarter. Mt. Airy was led by Matthew Dee who scored 9 points for the game.

VARSITY PLAY-INS: LINGANORE, CRESTWOOD ADVANCE IN "AA"; MSD, ST. JOHN'S MOVE ON IN "A" - 02/29/08

Linganore held off a determined Windor Knolls team 45 to 44 to advance into the second round of the conference tournement. Windors Knolls trailed trailed 23 to 12 at halftime but battled back in the thrid quarer led by Russell Lohr & Justin Ailstock to outsscore Linganore 17 to 12 and trail by 6 entering the 4th quarter. The duo combined for 13 points in the 3rd quarter. Luke Jackson & Ryan Hall from Linganore stepped up in the fourth quarter to help hold off the charging Windsor Knoll Team. Luke Jackson led Linganore with 10 points while Steven Washabaugh contibuted 8 points.

Crestwood jumped out to a quick 22-9 first quarter lead and never looked back, defeating TJ 69-45. Good pressure defense and some sharp shooting allowed Crestwood to maintain and increase their lead throughout the game. Taylor Hyssong and Demontrez Palmer led the Cavs balanced scoring attack with 15 points each. Kevin Kidwell and Deonte Taylor chipped in with 12 and 11 points respectively for the Cavs. Garrett Walther had a very good game for TJ, finishing with 21 points.

MSD Varsity was victorious over Taneytown by a score of 66-24. The first quarter concluded with 10-8 MSD lead. The second quarter MSD pulled away to 40-12 halftime lead and never looked back. MSD was led by Jesse Steingeiser with 21 points and 9 rebounds and Zack Barron pitched in for 13 points. Taneytown had a a good performance from Justin Brown with 9 points.

St. John's defeated Poolesville 32-26. No other details were made available.

WEST FREDERICK, MIDDLETOWN EARN WAY INTO "AA" JAYVEE ELITE EIGHT - 02/28/08

West Frederick defeats TJ 39-38 in overtime.The Cadets were down 19-23 at the half. Score was tied 35-35 at the buzzer. The Cadets scored 4 points to TJ's 3 in overtime. High scorer for TJ was Pablo Utterra with 12,Juwan Addison followeed with 10,Alex Moir added 6, while Jack Atmonavage added 4, Brian James, Christian Roby and Jay Molnar all added 2 points each. High scorer for the Cadets was Michael Tetteh with 13, Demorae Townsend added 9, Silverio Sambula added 7, Andrew Schwemmer and Christian James both added 5 points each.

Middletown defeated Linganore 39-20 in the other play-in. No other information was provided.

CATOCTIN, ST. JOHN'S REACH "A" JAYVEE QUARTERFINALS WITH WINS - 02/27/08

7th seeded Catoctin Cougars defeated 10th seeded Taneytown 41-25. Taneytown was led in scoring by Jordan Birdsall with 7 points and Brady Cook with 6 points. Jackson Steinly led the Cougars with 11 points. Alex Kennedy added 9 points and Zach Shanton chipped in 7 points.

Saint Johns beat MSD 44-11. St John’s jumped out to a 16-0 first quarter lead and continued the pace to a 27-1 half time lead. MSD got on the board in the second half and played aggressively to the end of the game. MSD was led by Cody Simmons six points. St Johns was led by Kyle Knapp’s 16 points and an all-around strong team defensive effort. St Johns advances to take on #1 tournament seed Glenwood on Saturday.

MONOCACY JAYVEES CAPTURE CHESAPEAKE, TOP SEED; MIDDLETOWN VARSITY, GLENWOOD JAYVEES ALSO BIG WINNERS - 02/24/08

Monocacy JV proved to be the power house going into the league's AA jayvee tournament with a decisive win against the Urbana Hawks 60 - 47. The win gave the Mustangs the Chesapeake division championship and #1 tourney seed. Monocacy led from start to finish and opened up a lead of 26 points before the Hawks made a run to cut the lead to 10 with four minutes left in the game. The Mustangs Carney Bernard wouldn't let the Hawks close down any closer with his game high 28 points which included clutch shots down the stretch. The Mustangs out muscled the Hawks inside with Zach Petril finishing with the second game high 15 points. Chris Sloan had a solid game and finished with 13 points. The Hawks were on the canvas, but got up after the eight count and fought hard to the finish. The Hawks were led by Zach Thomas and Josh Loveless with 10 points a piece. Kevin Heine and Brendan Wharton fought hard for the Hawks battling for contested rebounds all game and finished with seven and four respectively.

The Hawks varsity jumped out to a 20-3 halftime lead on their way to a 39-10 win over the visiting Mustangs. James Jaworski lead Urbana with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Tyler Tunnell had 6 points and 8 rebounds and Michael Spahr added 6 points along with his outstanding play at point. Monocacy was led in scoring by Michael Skvorak, Travis Phelps and Anthony Dowdy with 3 points each.

The Middletown Varsity Knights won the Antietam Division regular season title with a 35-22 victory over the Walkersville Lions. In doing so the also secured the #2 seed for the year-end tournament finale. Middletown was lead by steady Zack Fontenot and hiss 11 points and Ben Lewis and his 9. Michael Pritts chipped in 7 and played tenacious defense. The Lions were lead by Jameson Detweiler and Jacob Miller who scored 6 and 5 points and lead their team as they seem to do game after game.

Walkersville jayvee edged Middletown 32-27 in a close contest that was decided in the last 30 seconds of play. In the first quarter Jacob Bolton hit Phillip Addington for 2 points. Paulin Atemekeng had an excellent drive down the middle. Brian Schumm had a nice follow-up score. Demetrius Royster hit a 5 footer. Howie Kalamets went 2 for 2 from the line. Walkersville struggled a little with 3 walks on back to back plays. Steven Snyder had a nice score at the buzzer. In the 2nd, Atemekeng blocked a shot. Zach Welch sunk a 5 footer. Kalamets hustled to force a turnover and scored a 6-foot shot off a sweet move to the basket. He then took an offensive foul with heads-up play. Atemekeng hit Royster underneath for a score. Bolton passed to Jack Panther who scored on a 4-footer with time running out. Middletown led 12-11 at the half. In the 3rd Kalamets hit an 8-footer in the paint. Bolton scored on a 12 footer from the baseline. Panther blocked a shot and displayed superb defensive efforts. Jason Troh mad a big play to draw a foul and go 2 for 2 from the line. Bolton stole the ball and drove for 2 demonstrating stellar body control. Addington also stole a pass and went 1 for 2 on a foul committed on the ensuing fast break. Troh scored on an excellent follow-up shot underneath. Atemekeng scored 6 big points in the 4th quarter. Royster sank an 8 footer. Addington scored 2 points underneath with good positioning to beat the press. Detweiler scored a sweet 5-footer under pressure. With the score tied Detweiler then scored a 3 pointer with 20 seconds left and Snyder came up big going 2 for 2 from the line after being fouled to put the game just out of Middletown’s reach. Scorers for Walkersville were Atemekeng-10, Royster-8, Snyder-5, Detweiler-5, and Troh with 4. For Middletown it was Kalamets-8, Bolton-6, Addington-5, Welch-4, Panther-2, and Schumm with 2.

Glenwood JV beat Folly Quarter JV 47 – 24 to lock up a #1 seed in the upcoming jayvee "A" tournament. Folly Quarter played outstanding defensive basketball in the first and third quarters of this game. But, Glenwood was just too strong throughout the entire game with a suffocating pressure defense. Glenwood had balanced scoring throughout the game with 10 players in the scoring column. Glenwood was led by Nick Crabil with 8. Folly Quarter was led by Ryan Doyle and Jack Cook with 8 and 6 points respectively.

In varsity action, Glenwood upended FQMS 43 - 33. Glenwood had a big second quarter led by Troy Spurior who ended the 1st half with 21 points as Glenwood took a 29 - 13 lead. FQMS could never get back in the game in the 2nd half despite playing pressure defense and creating some turnovers. Glenwood was led by Spurrier who ended with 21 points with Anthony Arnette adding 9. FQMS was led by Davis Grove with 11 points while Evan Richardson contributed 9 points.

Linganore tops Thomas Johnson in the Lancers most lop-sided win of the season. Linganore used tough defense and their best shooting performance of the season to outscore Thomas Johnson in all four quarters. The game started out competitive until the five minute mark of the second quarter. Arman Ghaffari hit a three point shot to make the score 16-10 when the Lancer went on a 13-0 run to end the half. The Lancer shot the lights out in the third quarter to built on that lead. Linganore knocked down five three point shots in the third to help outscore TJ 25-3. The game was no longer in doubt entering the fourth as the Lancers cruised to a 66-28 victory. Tommy James and Tyler Beckwith led the lancers with 11 and 9 points respectively. Garrett Walther paced Thomas Johnson with 14 points.

In the final regular season game to be played at the current Linganore High School, the JV Lancers completed their regular season with a bang. Led by Clay Conner's 18 points, and Tyler Anderson's 11 rebounds, the Lancers were able to vanquish the JV Patriots by a score of 40-22. All of TJ's points were scored by 2 players with Jack Atmonavage scoring 12 (including 4 of 7 from the charity stripe) and Pablo Uterra chipping in 10 points including some super drives to the basket. Linganore was led defensively by Colin Fanning and Nick Gourley (11 points) who constantly hounded the Patriots into 15 turnovers. Garrett Fanning directed the Lancer attack with his pinpoint passing which led to to a season high 6 assists for the game.

MSD JV finally won first game of the season beating Taneytown by the score of 28 to 18. The score was 12 to 10 during the halftime. MSD was led by Cody Simmons with 20 points. Austin Birdsall of Taneytown led the team with 5 points followed by Jordan Birdsell and Dieudonne Mwiseneza with 4 points a piece.

MSD won the Varsity game, 52-20. MSD was led by Jesse Steingeiser with 16 points and 16 rebound . Also, Zack Barron and Derek Frank chipped in 12 points each. While Justin Brown scored 8 points to lead Taneytown.

Mt. Airy 48 St Johns varsity 27 - High Scorers: Ryan Millbuirn had 9, and Travis Decker 9 for St Johns. Ringold had 15, Tate had 12, and McTavison 10 for Mt. Airy.

Mt. Airy Jayvees beat St Johns 39-26. Mt Airy got off to a fast start to lead in the first half 20-4. Mt Airy was led by the strong inside play and game leading scorer Jack Quinn with 11 points. Zachary Weaver scored nine points, all three-pointers. St Johns responded in the second half to bring the game within ten, led by William Eskay’s eight points and David Larson’s strong rebounding and defensive play.

West Frederick defeated Windsor Knolls varsity with a final score of 57 - 41. Jalen Gee led West Frederick with 20 points, while Connor Corbitt and Nigel Fender each added 10. WKMS was led by Tucker Morgan's 11 points, and Thomas Stuart's 7. WKMS made a comeback late in the third quarter to cut the lead to four but a couple of big three pointers by West Frederick's Ryan Kennedy in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference.

The Hawks and Cadets played a close first quarter with the Hawks taking a 11-10 lead with a long 3 from Riley Tyeryar at the buzzer ending the first quarter. The Hawks exploded for 21 second quarter points-led by 12 points from Riley Spain. Spains quick drives to the basket and defensive pressure led to a 31-15 half time advantage for the Hawks. Charlie Norris hit the boards and contributed 7 with some tough shots on driving layups. Issac Apea and Cole Burdette also were big on the boards and each finished with 4 points. Sean and Scott Caravaggio played excellent defense and Jonathan Stein help run the offense in the 4th quarter and scored on a nice backdoor cut. Kevin Haaf came up with some big boards late in the game and Peter Chanatry had a great layup late at the end of the game. Kyle Singer hit 2 nice jumpers and finished with 4. Tyeryar added 6 . Riley Spain game high 21 paced the Hawks. The Cadets got a nice game from Demorae Townsend on strong finishes under the basket with 10. Silverio Sambula and Leonard Smith added 4 each.

URBANA VARSITY LOCKS UP CHESAPEAKE, #1 SEED; GLENWOOD CLINCHES JAYVEE PIEDMONT, VARSITY TOP SEED - 02/23/08

Urbana Varsity captured the Chesapeake division title by beating West Frederick 60-51. The Hawks led from start to finish, even as West Frederick got close in the second half with pressure defense, by playing solid on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. James Jaworski led balanced scoring by the Hawks with 18, Kyler Rose and Thomas Utt both had 13 and Matt Lane added nine. Jalen Gee led the Cadets with 18. Ryan Kennedy added 11, and Theo Remy had nine.

Urbana JV defeats West Frederick Cadets today 46-24.The game was 14-15 at halftime with the Cadets holding their own. Into the 3rd quarter Urbana ran with the lead and never looked back. High scorer for West Frederick was Demorae' Townsend with 11 points Michael Tetteh followed with 7, Andrew Schwemmer added 5 and William Copeland 1 point. High scorer for Urbana was Zach Thomas with 12, Darren Ambush with 9, Brendon Wharton added 8 points,Kevin Heine added 6 points along with Jonah Loveless.

In varsity action, Glenwood defeated Catoctin 42 to 29, to wrap up first place in the Piedmont Division. Glenwood took an eight point lead into what was a low scoring first half, leading at halftime 17 to 9. Glenwood came out with a strong effort in the second half and pulled away by the end of the third quarter. Catoctin started to catch fire on offense in the fourth quarter but it was too little, too late, as Glenwood held on for an 11 point win. Glenwood's Joseph Tolbert led all scorers with 12 points. John Komsa and Anthony Arnette added another eight and six points respectively for Glenwood. Catoctin was led by Aaron Barker and Garrett Sprankle with six points each. Josh Laramore added another five and Brad Little four points.

Glenwood used seven first half 3-pointers to pull away from Catoctin and defeated the host Cougars 73-29 in JV action Saturday night. L.J. Finney led Glenwood with 21 points and Mickey Wynee added 17. Alex Kennedy led the Cougars with 9 points and Zach Shanton chipped in 5 points.

FQMS varsity dominated from the start of the game using a running offense and tough defense defeating Taneytown 71 - 25. FQMS balanced scoring was lead by Michael Nicastro with 15 points, while Davis Grove and Logan Dubbe added 12 apiece with James Wood and Theo Nowline contributing 10 and 9 points respectively. Taneytown was lead by Justin Brown who hit 3, three point shots and ended with 9 points while Jordan Storey added 6 points

Folly quarter JV beat Taneytown 66 -22. In their most complete game of the season Folly Quarter played hard for the entire game. Folly Quarter used a strong pressing defense in the first half and accurate outside shooting to build a 31-11 lead. Folly Quarter kept the pressure on and continued to build the lead in the second half. Folly Quarter was led by Ryan Doyle who had five 3 point shots to finish with 19 points. Brian Mobley, Kevin Rosenthal, and Max Boxall had 11, 6, and 4 points respectively. Taneytown was a scrappy team and never gave up. They were led by Dieudonne Mwiseneza and Jordan Birdsall with 6 points each.

Ballenger Creek varsity beat Monocacy 47-34.Mark Hoy and Ali Ariz lead Ballenger Creek with 12 and 10 points.Paris Price lead Monocacy with 15 points

Monocacy jayvee 59 Ballenger 40. In a closely contested first half affair that saw Monocacy leading 23-18, the Mustangs where led by Carney Bernard and Zach Pertrill seven points, Andy Sahnnon and Tommy Tran also had seven points in the half for Ballenger. The second was all Mustangs as they pulled away behind good defense and the shooting of Carney Bernard. Mustangs - Carney Bernard 23; Health Dahlgren 2; Michael Lango 5; Zach Pertrill 13; Chris Sloan 4; Aaron Mencer 2; Micheal Omenchenko 8, 8 assists. Ballenger – Andy Shannnon 8; Kwaveon McDonald 8; Tommy Tran 17; Joseph finley 3

WKMS Hawks varsity lose a heart breaker at home in overtime to the Linganore Lancers 45 to 43. The Hawks took the lead late in the second quater led by both Thomas Stuart and Russell Lohr with 5 points each but the Lancers hung with the Hawks with Tyler Beckwith scoring 4 points in the quater. The Lancers got a scare when thier big man Stephen Wasabaugh went down hard on a jump ball call he was inable to return. The Hawks built a 5 point lead to end the 3rd quater out scoring the Lancers by 4 but the Lancers were able to come back big in the 4th quater to tie it up at the end of regulation led by Luke Jackson's 5 points. The Overtime period started with Justin Ailstock hitting a three giving the Hawks the early lead but the hawks were then outscored by the Lancers with Tyler Thompson hitting a bucket on a hard play down low to take the lead and win the game. Leading scores for the game were Russll Lohr with 17 ponts and Luke Jackson with 9 ponts.

The Hawks and Lancers played a tight first half with the Hawks scoring late to take a 17-12 lead at the break. The Hawks picked up the defensive intensity in the 3rd quarter building a 33-25 lead after 3 quarters of play. The Lancers made a late run outscoring the Hawks in the final quarter but the Hawks help on for a 38-31 victory. The Hawks were led by Issac Apea with 12, Kyle Singer with 9, and Charlie Norris with 8. Riley Spain of the Hawks played an outstanding game controlling the offense and playing great defense and finished with 5. The Lancers were led by Garrett Fanning with 9, Tyler Anderson with 7 and Aaron Sharer with 6.

Oakdale varsity beats Crestwood 61-40. After a tight hard fought first half Crestwood held a 25-22 lead. Oakdale came out in the second half with strong defense and held Crestwood to 3pts in the 3rd. The eagles stayed tuff through the 4th to secure the win. Juan Retana lead the eagles with a great all around game 14 points 13 rebounds and 9 assists and Clay Alldrege added 9. For Crestwood Kevin Kidwell had 14 and Deonte Taylor had 10

Crestwood jayvee jumped out to an early lead against Oakdale and cruised to an easy victory despite several runs by Oakdale to make the game interesting. The final score was Crestwood 45 Oakdale 31. Mark Levine led the way for Crestwood and finished as the games high scorer with 12. Theodore Johnson also chipped in 10 for Crestwood. Payne Hebron and Luke Bartlett each had eight points for Oakdale.

Mt.Airy varsity defeated MSD 39-34. Both teams came out playing aggressive defense which limited each other's scoring in the first half, as Mt.Airy led 19-11. MSD was able to cut into the half time lead by out scoring Mt.Airy by six in the third quarter only to trail at the end of the third quarter 25-23. With the lead never more than 5 points MSD continued their pressure defense and Zack Barrans' third 3 pointer of the game, and MSD leading scorer with 11 points, kept the game close. MSD switched from a man to man defense to a zone mid way through the 4th quarter only to see Mt.Airy out score MSD by three and take the game. Carson Dugstad's six 4th quarter points, 13 total, helped Mt.Airy prevail. Jesse Streingieser and Tyler Lewis each had eight points for MSD, and James Steingieser added seven points. Ryan Tate finished with nine points for Mt.Airy and Gavin McTavish led all scorer's with 15 points.

Mt. Airy JV defeated MSD JV 46-28. Mt. Airy was lead by Jack Quinn who had a game high, both in points, 12 and rebounds, 11. Brandon Quinn also had an outstanding game form MAMS with eight points and six rebounds. MSD was lead by Evan Kurth's outstanding shooting effort, four for four from the field and two for two from the foul line for a total of 10 points.

BALLENGER CREEK DOUBLES UP TJ IN CHESAPEAKE PAIR - 02/21/08

The Ballenger JV jumped out into a 19-2 run at the end of the first quarter and led 32-10 going into the half. The Bulldogs Andy Shannon hit 3 three pointers in the first quarter alone and ended up being the game high scorer with 22 points. The Bulldogs won the contest 54-40. Bulldogs Tommy Tran and Ryan Grant each had 10 points a piece and Joseph Finley added six points for the Bulldogs. TJ was led by Pablo Uterra with 12 points and Jack Atmonavage added 11 points.

The Varsity Bulldogs won the game with a score of 64-32 over the Patriots. The Bulldogs jumped out to an 35-13 lead at the half and never looked back. Every Bulldog scored. They were led by Mark Hoy with 18 points and teammates Ali Aziz and John Cappolella chipped in eight points a piece and Denzel Ofori added seven points. TJ was led by Kenny Whims who scored 14 points who also had 3 three pointers and Garrett Walther who added six points for the Patriots.

CRESTWOOD JAYVEES CLINCHES ANTIETAM TITLE AS WALKERSVILLE UPSETS POOLESVILLE - 02/20/08

Crestwood gained the Antietam division's jayvee championship as Walkersville took a 24-23 decision against Poolesville. It was a hard fought defensive struggle throughout. Poolesville's big man Josh Wolmack dominated the defensive boards but was held to only one field goal. Andy Baker led the way for the visiting Falcons with 8 points including two three pointers. Collin Turner and Kirby Carmac followed with 5 each including critical threes in the fourth quarter. The game was at a snails pace offensively in the first half with the Lions leading at halftime 8-6. The Falcons caused three quick turnovers to start the second half and led after three 15-14. Walkersville opened up the fourth on a 5 to nothing run only to let Poolesville shoot their way back into it. Good defense down the stretch and timely free throw shooting from the Lion's Demitrious Royster, who finished with a game high 9 points, sealed it for the hosts. Jason Trott dominated the defensive boards (10) and chipped in 6 points for the victors.

Walkersville led from start to finish in it's last home game of the season, outpacing visiting Poolesville 30 -19. The Lions were led by Jameson Detweiler and Zach Wathen who both netted 6 points, with Zach adding 6 rebounds as well. Ben Bandy had 5 points for Walkersville. The Poolesville squad was anchored by the play and shooting of Billy Cartwright, who led the team in scoring with 6 points, with help from Dylan Bourque's 5 points and Clint Cornell's 4 points.

Ballenger won the Varsity game against Monocacy 44 to 37. It was a game of several lead changes. Monocacy led at the half 23 to 22. Ali Aziz scored 8 points in the fourth quarter to help Ballenger pull away to get the victory. Ballenger was led by there sharp shooting guard Mark Hoy who hit four 3 pointers for the game high of 16 points. The Mustangs was led by there big man Tony Dowy with 12 points. Paul Mcliser and Michael Skuorail chip in 9 points for Monocacy.

Monocacy won the JV game 49 to 31. The Mustangs took a 31 to 18 lead into the half and kept on rolling in the second half. Monocacy was led by Carney Bernard with 20 points and Zach Petrill chip in 11. Ryan Grant was the high man for the Bulldogs with 11 points and Tommy Tran chip in 9.

MIDDLETOWN VARSITY, POOLESVILLE JAYEES NOTCH IMPORTANT VICTORIES - 02/18/08

The Middletown Varsity Knights secured their second win of the long holiday weekend by defeating Windsor Knolls 46-30. Ten of fourteen players tallied points for the Knights lead by Zack Fontenot with 14. Brent Tompkins, Austin Klingensmith and Tyler Kissner all scored from the bench as well. Windsor Knolls was paced by Tucker with 8 points while Nick Peifer, Russell Lohr and Thomas Stewart all contributed points in the contest.

Windsor Knolls topped Middletown jayvee 47 to 35. The first quarter saw Isaac Apea score 2 points underneath. Kyle Singer sank a 3-pointer. Cole Burdette had a nice score. Zach Welch displayed marvelous rebounding skills. Howie Kalamets had a sweet baseline score. Singer had a terrific 5-footer. Middletown was hurt by 9 turnovers in the quarter and a total of 17 in the half. In quarter #2, Welch went coast to coast. Riley Spain had an amazing off-balance score and connected with the extra point also. Jacob Bolton hit Ian Grife for 2 points underneath. Charlie Norris was unstoppable with 9 points in the quarter and an excellent 10-footer. Windsor Knolls displayed all sorts of offense and led by 15 at the half. In the 3rd, Bolton blocked a shot and drained a 3-pointer. Kalamets blocked a shot and Apea made a tremendous baseline move for a score. Norris sank a nice shot high off the backboard. Brian Schumm put down a good lay-up score. In the 4th, Bradley Rhinehart went 2 for 2 from the line. Apea scored under pressure. Kalamets had a terrific drive and lay-up. Rhinehart drove through three people for a score. Windsor Knolls ran out the clock for the good part of the quarter. Scorers for W.K. were Norris-15, Apea-8, Singer-7, Riley Tyeryar-6, Spain-4, Cole Burdette-3, and Scott and Sean Carvaggio with 2 each. For Middletown it was Grife-8, Kalamets-7, Rhinehart, Welch, and Bolton each with 5, Considine-3, Schumm-2, and Jack Panther with 1.

Poolesville's JV guard combo of Andy Baker (17 points w/four three-pointers) and Collin Turner (14 points, six steals) proved to be too much for Folly Quarter's in Poolesville's 51-30 win over their fellow Falcons on Monday. Folly Quarter's big man, Jack Cook, did the best he could to keep the visitors in the game. He finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Teammates Ryan Doyle and Nick Ball chipped in five and four points, respectively. Poolesville's Thomas Wolz blocked five shots and scored three points in the win.

Folly Quarter's 7th grader, Logan Dubbe, hit for 17 points to lead his Falcons to a 49-17 win over Poolesville's Varsity Boys. Teammates Michael Nicastro (10 points) and Davis Grove (nine points) did their share as well in the blowout victory. Ean Hill-Addison scored seven points to lead Poolesville.

GLENWOOD VARSITY FIRST TO CLINCH AS MSD STUNS FOLLY QUARTER - 02/17/08

Glenwood's varsity clinched the Piedmont division championship as MSD handed second-place Folly Quarter and upset loss 53 to 45 in an exciting game. Folly Quarter opened with a big lead and led after the inital quarter, 15 to 8. MSD outscored Folly Quarter in the 2nd quarter 16-4 and led at halftime, 24 to 19. After three quarters, MSD led 36 to 30. Folly Quarter closed to within 3 points twice in the 4th quarter but MSD hit key free throws and pulled away for the win. MSD was led by Jesse Steingieser's 14 points, including 10 of 14 free throws. He also had 7 rebounds and 4 assists. James Steingieser had 12 points and 8 rebounds. Derek Frank had 12 points and 5 assists. Tyler Lewis had 8 points and 10 rebounds. Folly Quarter was led by Logan Dubbe with 15 points, including three 3-point baskets. Davis Grove contributed 12 points and Michael Nicastro had 8 points.

MSD JV team lost to Folly Quarter by the score of 4 to 38. Evan Kurth led the team with 4 points while Folly Quarter's Nick Ball and John Kum each scored 11 points. The score was 4 to 23 at halftime. MSD was scoreless for the rest of the game.

Urbana varsity 57 Linganore 32. Urbana broke open a close game in the third quarter. After falling behind 23 to 22 early in the third quarter Urbana scored 21 straight points to take a commanding 20 point lead into the fourth quarter and easily coasted to a 25 point win at Linganore. Matt Lane led the way for Urbana with 10 points in the 3rd quarter and finishing with a game high 24 points. Luke Jackson led Linganore with 10 points.

Behind a well balanced offensive attack (10 different players scored) the Urbana Hawks jayvee handled the Linganore Lancers by a score of 52-28. The Hawks flew out to an early 18-9 first quarter lead and never looked back. With the Hawks playing super defense and shooting the ball very well, the Lancers could not get going and were out played in all facets of the game. The Hawks balanced attack was led by guard Darren Ambush who totaled 13 points. Clay conner led the Lancers with 9 points. Taylor Sharer came off the bench for the Lancers to add 6 points.

St. Johns varsity 41 - Catoctin 52. High Scorers: St Johns - Jackson Eskay with 11 pionts. Catoctin - Sprankle with 10 pionts and Watkins with 10 points

In a hotly contested JV game Catoctin defeated host St Johns 35-32. The game saw numerous lead changes as Catoctin held a 13-11 first quarter edge. St Johns responded in the second quarter to lead 17-15 at half time. To start the third quarter St Johns opened up a five point lead, but Catoctin responded to outscore St Johns 15-9 for the quarter to take a 30-26 lead to end the quarter. St Johns outscored Catocin in the final quarter 6-5 but it was not enough to over take the good ball control Catoctin exhibited to close out the win. Both teams struggled to convert on numerous opportunities from the foul line as a result of two very aggressive defenses. Catoctin held the edge completing 10 attempts to St Johns’ 4. Catoctin dominated the boards, holding a significant edge on both the offensive and defensive rebounds. Seven players scored for each team. Zach Shanton finished as the games high scorer with 12 points. St Johns was led by Kyle Knapp’s 11.

The Middletown Varsity Knights held serve on their home court and beat Oakdale 54-29. The Knights had balanced scoring with 11 of 13 players getting into the scoring column. Zack Fontenot was on fire with his pinpoint perimeter shooting and netted 17 points for Middletown. Connor Boudart, Brent Tompkins and Kenneth Bartlett played well off the bench as well for the Knights as all 3 also scored. On the Oakdale side Nick Preston scored 8 while Juan Retana tallied 7 and played an all around solid floor game.

Despite a strong 4th quarter comeback effort by Oakdale the Middletown jayvee team held on to win the game by a score of 31 to 24. The Middletown press proved very effective in the first quarter giving the team lots of scoring opportunities. Donovan Burris had a magnificent baseline score. John Bush tied up the ball to force a turnover. Thomas Evich came up big with strong rebounding off nice box-out play. In the 2nd quarter Ian Grife passed to Jacob Bolton who hit a sweet 8-footer. Payne Hebron blocked a shot. Grife scored 2 off a nice short offensive rebound. Phillip Addington hit a 7-footer. Christopher Nelson went 1 for 2 from the line. Tim Schumacher’s hustling caused a turnover. Howie Kalamets hit a nice 5-footer under pressure and scored the foul shot also. Burris hit Hebron who put down a nice 2-footer off a fast break. Seth Myer’s power drive just missed. Jack Panther drew a rare offensive foul. Brad Rhinehart demonstrated textbook hustle under the offensive boards. Middletown led by 13 at the half. In the 3rd quarter Brian Schumm passed to Jack Panther who connected with a nice hook shot under the basket. Jake Bolton hit Panther underneath with a perfect pass for a score. Matthew Klauka showed prime-time hustle to get a defensive rebound. Matthwew Allwein went 1 for 2 from the line. In the 4th, Rhinehart made a strong move underneath and went 1 for 2 at the line. Luke Bartlett scored off a fast break with perfect heads-up play. Grife blocked a shot off a baseline move. Mead Considine came up with a big steal. Ben Racz scored off a dynamic lay-up from the left side. Hebron scored two big buckets off smart big-man play underneath. Bartlett hit a nice 5 –footer. David Carlisle followed up his own shot and scored. A bucket by Racz with under a minue left put Middletown up by 10. Allwein hit a 3-pointer. Ben Panther hit a 4-footer and Allwein almost hit another 3 when time ran out on a strong comeback effort. Scoring for Oakdale was Hebron-8, Allwein and Bartlett with 4 each, and Nelson, Logan Smith, Burriss and Trevor O’Conner each scored 2. For Middletown it was J. Panther -8, Kalamets-6, Bolton-5, Racz-5, B. Panther, Addington and Grife with 2 each and Rhinehart with 1.

The Walkersville varsity beat Brunswick at Brunswick Sunday evening 41-26. Brunswick never got it going offensively the entire game while Walkersville used balanced scoring to get the job done. Brunswick managed only 2 points in the first quarter and was behind 9-2 to end the quarter. Defense kept them in the game but Walkersvilles defense won out as they took an 18-8 lead in to halftime. Brunswick scored 10 in the third but couldn't put a dent in the score finishing the third period down 26-18. Brunswick battled to within 2 points at 26-24 but then managed only two more points the rest of the game before losing 41-26. Ben Bundy and Jay Dennis both had 10 points for Walkersville. Brunswick was led by Ian Fisher and Geoffrey Davis with 7 each.

In the JV game, Brunswick lost to Walkersville 30-21. Alex Detweiler had 8 and Demetrios Royster had 7 for Walkersville. For Brunswick, Joey Conrad and Chance Smith had 5 each.

Mt.Airy varsity defeated Taneytown 64-24. Mt.Airy was led by Nic Ciminos' 21 points, while Ryan Tate added 15 points and Gavin McTavish had 14 points. Justin Brown led Taneytowns scoring with eight points.

Mount Airy Middle School JV pulled out a close game against Taneytown Middle JV. Final score was 28-18. Mount Airy was led by Jack Quinn with 10 points, Matt Dee with 8, and Jake Pooton with 6. Taneytown was led by Bradley Schug with 6 points on two three pointers. Dieudonne Mwiseneza and Christopher Vasquez contributed 5 each for Taneytown. Coach White of the Mount Airy Bulldogs received a technical foul in the third quarter.

URBANA, MONOCACY STAY ON JAYVEE COLLISION COURSE; GLENWOOD INCHES TOWARD VARSITY PIEDMONT TITLE - 02/16/08

The JV Hawks were able to come from an eight point half time deficit against the Bulldogs 41 to 36. The two teams sized each other up in the first quarter ending with an Eight to Seven lead for the visiting Bulldogs. The second quarter produced an upset in the making with Ballenger Creek taking a 23 to 15 lead into the locker room. Urbana came out of the locker room fired up and went on a 17-0 run to go up 32 to 23 going to the 4th. The fourth quarter Ballenger outscored the Hawks 13-9, but it wasn't enough to create the upset. Both teams battled on the perimeter and in the post. The Bulldogs were led by the big man Tommy Tran who finished with 16. Ryan Grant was able to create the Tran buckets with dribble penetration and dumps to Tran. Grant finished with eight points with two three point shots. The Bulldogs Andy Shannon finished with five points and multiple steals creating tough matchups for the Hawks. The Hawks were led by Brendan Wharton with 13. The Hawks defense created multiple turnovers in the third quarter and kept the bulldogs to zero points during the third period. The Hawks had eight players in the scoring column with Kevin Heine four of his six points in the second half, Jonah Loveless & Darin Ambush each contributed with five points. Josh Loveless & Zach Thomas each chipped in with four a piece. Ethan Heiser hit two free throws and Zach Woodard rounded out the scoring with two. Both teams played tough and showed 100% effort from start to finish.

Urbana and Ballenger Creek varsity battled for four quarters in a tough and tight game with the Hawks prevailing 50-41. Urbana was led by James Jaworkski with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Matt Lane chipped in 15 points and Thomas Utt had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Bulldogs were led by Jaylen White with 13, Isiah Plummer with 12 and Mark Hoy with 8 points.

Monacacy JV defeats West Frederick Cadets 67 to 31. High scorer for West Frederick was Demorae Townsend with 11 points Silverio Sambula with 6, Andrew Schwemmer with 4 Michael Tetteh and Matt Hynes both with 3, and Jonathan King,Marcus Smith with 2 points each. High scorer for Monacacy high scorer was Carney Bernard with 22, Chris Sloan with 18, and Zach Petrill with 10 points.

In a tightly contested defensive battle, West Frederick Varsity edged Monocacy 35-30. After West Frederick took a ten point half time lead, Monocacy came back in the 4th quarter to make the game close down to the wire. Jalen Gee of West Frederick led all scorers with 15 points, with excellent outside shooting, helped by Nigel Fender with seven, Theo Remy with five and a key 4th quarter three pointer, and Connor Corbitt and Jerel English had four each to round out the scoring. Denzel Helms and Ky Reinhardt added strong defensive support. Monocacy was led by Tony Dowdy with ten points and aggressive inside play, helped by Paris Price with nine.

Glenwood varsity 61 St. Johns 30. At the end of the first quarter the score was tied at 11 points. Defensively St. Johns players were making it difficult for Glenwood to take any uncontested shots during the first quarter. Most of Glenwood's points were from fast breaks, while St. Johns teammates were able to run through plays taking fine shots. Glenwood outscored St. Johns during the 2nd quarter giving them a lead for the remainder of the game. St. Johns players came out after half time outscoring Glenwood, but Glenwood held on to the lead until the end with a final score of Glenwood 61 and St. Johns 30. Glenwoods high scorers were Troy Spurrier with 17 points and Anthony Arnette added 15 points. St. Johns high scorers were Buckey Ericson with 18 points and Jackson Eskay adding 6 points.

Glenwood jayvees defeated St. John's 60 to 15 Saturday night at Glenelg High School to move to 14 and 2 on the season. Glenwood used a mix of full-court presses, man to man and zone defenses to hold St. John's to 15 points for the game. Against St. John's zone Glenwood moved the ball inside and back out and was able to hit on five 3 pointers. Glenwood's Mikey Wynne led all scorers with 12 followed by Tomi Fadiran and Colin Randle with 9 each. Zach Roskowinsky led St. John's with 4 points.

Poolesville varsity traveled to Mt.Airy looking for a non conference win only to be denied. Mt.Airy was able to open a first half lead 29-8 as Poolesville was unable to connect on some early shots. Poolesville connected on four threes in the third quarter, starting with Dylan Bourque connecting to open the quarter and hitting a three at mid court to end the quarter, finishing with 11 points and leading Poolsvilles' scoring. Outscored in the third quarter 21-14, Mt. Airy led at the end of the quarter 44-29. Poolesville shooting cooled off in the fourth quarter as Mt.Airy won 56-34. Mt.Airy was led by Gavin McTavish 25, Chad Ringold nine points and Ryan Tate,Carson Dugstad and Mark Magnusen six points a piece. Ean Hill - Addison added nine points for Poolesville all in the second half.

After a competitive first quarter that had Poolesville up just 11-6, they pulled away from Mount Airy behind 10 points from Colin Turner and 8 from Niko Michaels for a 45-18 win. Niko had two three pointers. Josh Wolmack and Thomas Wolz contributed 6 points a piece to the win. Mount Airy was led by Jack Quinn with 8 points and Mathew Dee with 6.

Oakdale Varsity and Brunswick played a back-and-forth game which saw Brunswick prevail in the end 47-39. It was a tale of two halves. In the first half it was a bettle between Oakdale sharpshooter Ben Bowman who poured in 16 first half points, and Brunswick big man Ian Fisher who tallied 18 first half points to give Brunswick a 27-21 halftime lead. The second half saw two Box-and-1's deployed that shut down Bowman (no second half points) and Fisher (4 second half points). But strong defense by Brunswick and too many turnovers by Oakdale proved to be the difference. Bowman led the Eagles with 16 points. Fisher paced the Railroaders with 22 points. Clay Alldredge pulled down 13 rebounds for the Eagles.

Oakdale and Brunswick jayvee played a nail-biter. Brunswick was able to outpace Oakdale early and led at the end of the first quarter with a score of 14 to 9. Both teams played a solid 2nd quarter with Brunswick going in to the locker room at the half with a 23 – 19 edge over Oakdale. Oakdale came out strong in the 3rd quarter and was able to pull the game to within one point by the close of the quarter. The 4th quarter was a real defensive battle and Oakdale sec ured the lead by one point with just over 30 seconds left in the game. Oakdale took a quick shot that was off the mark and Brunswick grabbed the rebound and called a timeout. Brunswick came off the timeout with a play that got them a nice look at the basket but wasn’t able to knock the shot down on the first attempt. Great offensive rebounding netted Brunswick two additional shots and Oakdale fouled on the second shot. Brunswick knocked down both free throws and went on to win the game by a score of 38 to 37. Joey Conrad had the hot hand for Brunswick and was the leading scorer for the game with 18 points. For Brunswick: Chase Smith had eight points; Joseph Fawley had five points; Nathaniel Eiben had three points; and Cody Wenner and Nick Thompson had two points each. Payne Hebron led the way for Oakdale with 10 points followed by Donovan Burris with nine points. Luke Bartlett chipped in six points; Chris Nelson four points; John Bush three points; Logan Smith two points; David Carlisle two points; and Seth Myers one point.

In a game that saw 3 pointers dropping for both teams, Windsor Knolls varsity defeated T.J., to sweep the season series. The first half saw the lead switching back and forth, with W.K. leading at the half, 25-22. Justin Ailstock led W.K. with 19 points, including five three pointers. With teammates Tucker Morgan and Garrett Rozich both dumping in nine points. T.J. was led by Ken Wimms' 14 points. Garrett Walther asisted with two three pointers, and tough play on the boards. The second half saw W.K.'s defense tighten up holding T.J. to only two fourth quarter points. W.K. slowed down the pace of play in the last three minutes, keeping the ball away from T.J. In the end W.K. pulled away 53-36, in this game played at T.J.

Windsor Knolls JV team defeated TJ 57-25. Windsor Knolls led at half 18-15 but turned up the defensive heat in the second half to pull away. Leading the Hawks in scoring was Riley Tyeryar with 16 while Charlie Norris chipped in 11 and Issac Apea had 10. TJ was led by Pablo Utrera with 9, Naz Sampson with 7 and Jack Atmonavage had 5.

BALLENGER CREEK DOUBLES UP LINGANORE IN CHESAPEAKE PAIR - 02/14/08

Ballenger Creek beat Linganore 52 to 38 in the jv game. After a hard fought first half, the score was tied at 21 a piece, Then Ballanger went on a 18-0 run in the 3rd quarter and never looked back. the Bulldogs where led by there point guard Ryan Grant with 13 points, Andy Shannon, and Kwaveon McDonald chip in 12 a piece. The Lancer was led by there Shore shooting guards Clay Connor who hit 5 three's pointers for 15 points and Garrett Fanniny who hit 3 three's pointers for 9 points.

Ballenger won the Varsity game 38 to 30. It was a tough defensive game the score was tied 14 up at the end of the first half. Ballenger went up 29 to 14 at the end of the 3rd quarter. In the 4th quarter with 35 seconds to go the Bulldogs was up by 10. The Lancers hit a lay up, stole the end bound pass and hit a 3 pointer to cut the led to 5 points, all in a matter of 5 seconds. The Bulldogs call a timeout, to re-group to hold on to the victory. Ballenger was led by Mark Hoy with 15 points, and Isiah Plummer had 12 points. The Lancer was led by Stephen Washabaugh with 12 points.

WALKERSVILLE JAYVEES UPSET CRESTWOOD AS PART OF ANTIETAM TWINBILL SWEEP - 02/13/08

JV Walkersville 34 Crestwood 23 Crestwood started out quick with good defense holding the Lions scoreless in the first quarter while Chad Owens scored 4 of his team leading 9 points. The Lions, behind good shooting from Alex Detweiler crawled back into the second quarter outscoring Crestwood 12 -8 going to halftime down 12 -14. Walkersville defense won the second half holding Crestwood to only nine second half points. Walkersville was led in scoring by Paulin Atemekeng with 12 points. Alex Detweiler and Demetrious each chipped in 6 for the Lions. Jonah Merideth scored 6 for Crestwood.

Good outside shooting in the first half, and strong inside play in the second half, allowed the home team Lions to secure a win vs. cross town Antietam opponent Crestwood, 39 - 21. The Lions Jameson Detweiler was red hot in the first half, scoring all 8 Walkersville points in the opening quarter, finishing the game with 10 total. The Caveliers Deonte Taylor countered with 5 first half points of his own to keep the game close. The Lions Jacob Miller scored all of his 13 points in the half, when combined with his 12 rebounds, gave him his second "double-double" of the year. Walkersville's Zach Wathen (8 points) rounded out the Lions scoring, and sharp shooting Taylor Hyssong of Crestwood led all scorers with 11 points.

BRUNSWICK VARSITY LOGS HUGE UPSET OF UNBEATEN DIVISION-LEADING MIDDLETOWN - 02/10/08

The Brunswick varsity was able to hold on to a two point lead with 1.7 seconds on the clock to secure a huge victory over Middletown on Sunday at home, 45-43. The game was close throughout with neither team holding more than a eight point advantage. The first quarter ended with Middletown leading 11-9. Brunswick got its offense going in the second to take a 23-20 halftime lead. They continued their lead through the third quarter, 34-29, and held on to seal the victory. Ian Fisher led Brunswick with 14 points and Dallas Darling put in 12. For Middletown, Zachary Fontenot had 15 and Ben Lewis added 13.

In the JV game, Brunswick beat Middletown 39-29. Chance Smith had 9 and Joe Fawley had 7 for Brunswick. For Middletown Bradley Rinehart had 8 and Jack Panther had 6.

Urbana varsity 45 - TJ 27. Urbana led 16-6 at the end of the first quarter and continued to build on their lead throughout the game. The Hawks were led in scoring by Matt Lane with 13 points. James Jaworski added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Kyler Rose chipped in 9 points. TJ was led in scoring by Ken Wimms, Garrett Walther and Tyler Tremaine with 6 points each.

Urbana jayvee 42 TJ 20. Urbana Hawks JV were able to defeat the visiting Thomas Johson Patriots. Darrin Ambush led all players with fifteen points while his teamate Kevin Heine chipped in with eleven. The Hawks had solid performances from Micheal Aquino and Nate Gibson with four points a piece. The Patriots were led by Jack Atmonavage and Pueblo Uttera with seven points each.

St Johns varsity 51 Taneytown 19. Leading Scorers- St Johns- Buckey Erichsen 12 Taneytown- Jordan Storey 8.St Johns got off to a strong start and finished the first quarter with a 15-2 lead. St Johns went on to extend the lead to 29- 6 at the half. Taneytown played very hard and stayed even for most of the rest of the game. Taneytown has improved and is scoring better but today St Johns was a little stronger and able to build a big enough lead to get the win. Jackson Eskay also played good defense for St Johns and turned many stops into layups.

St. John’s JV defeated Taneytown 32-8. St Johns got off to a 9-0 fist quarter start with balanced scoring of five players. Taneytown got on the scoreboard in the second quarter to enter halftime trailing 15-2. Taneytown competed hard throughout the game despite shots just not dropping for them. Nine St. Johns players led a balanced scoring attack, led by Bryan Thompson’s eight points. Dieudonne Mwiseneza led Taneytown with all eight points.

Oakdale's aggressive dynamic duo of Ben Bowman and John Dearstine scored 10 and 11 points respectively in the Eagles Varsity win over Poolesville by a final score of 51-36. Juan Retana (nine points) and Matthew Myers (seven points) of Oakdale also helped keep the Falcons at bay. With Poolesville only dressing seven players, the Eagles ran early and often to establish a 20-point lead at one point. The Falcons managed to close the gap to ten points in the fourth quarter behind the play of Ean Hill-Addison (13 points) and Billy Cartwright (eight points).

Poolesville's JV broke open a close game against Oakdale by igniting a 17-0 run midway through the third quarter of the Falcon's 52-32 win over the Eagles. Poolesville guard Collin Turner hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer at the end of the third quarter to take the wind out of the Eagle's wings. He finished with eight points. Helping out Turner was Poolesville big man Josh Womack (nine points) and guard Niko Michaels (eight points). Oakdale's center, Payne Hebron, led all scores with 11 points and all rebounders with 12. Chris Nelson also chipped in eight points for the Eagles.

Ballenger Creek varsity 41 Windsor Knolls 35. leading scorer for BC was Mark hoy with 12 points with 6 scored in the second quater. Wkms was led by Thomas stuart with 12 and Justin ailstock with 11. BC led by 1 at the half but increased its lead to 8 at the end of the 3rd quater before WKMS fought back in the 4th quater but it was not enough to overcome the lead that BC built in the 3rd.

The Hawks jayvee exploded for 19 first quarter points to take a 19-6 lead at the end of one. Charlie Norris led the quick start with 9 points. The aggressive defense of the Hawks forced numerous Bulldogs turnovers and the Hawks built a 15 point half-time lead 30-15. Norris led the Hawks with 13 points and was also a force on the boards. Riley Spain had an outstanding game at the point contributing 10 points mostly on his quick drives to the basket. Kyle Singer nailed a pair of 3s and finished with 8 points to help the Hawks win 51-32. The Bulldogs got a great game from Andy Shannon with a game high 21 points-hitting three 3 pointers. Kwaveon McDonald had a solid game finishing with 8.

The Linganore Lancers rode a great defensive effort to beat Monocacy 41-30. The game was a defensive battle from the start with each team struggling to score in the first quarter. Monocacy did not score until the four minute mark and ended the first with only four points while the Lancer only scored nine. The second quarter saw more of the same as the Lancers took a 19-6 point lead into the half. The scoring picked up in the second half as Monocacy tried to pick up the pace by pressing full court. The Lancers handled the press and were able to extend the lead by 18 early in the fourth. With the score reading 40-22, Monocacy went on a 8-1 to end the game. It proved to be too little too late. Stephen Washabaugh and Ryan Hall led the way for the Lancers, scoring 12 and 10 points respectively. James Harris and Paris Price each scored 9 for Monocacy.

Monocacy jayvee - 62 Linganore - 31. Led by leading scorer Carney Bernard's 23 points the Monocacy JV team easily handled the JV Lancers. The Lancers were led by Clay Conner's 11 points and Justin Corbitt's 8 rebounds. Chris Sloan had 13 and Zach Petrill chipped in 11 points for Monocacy.

Glenwood varsity made it four wins in a row with a 44 - 27 victory over Mount Airy. Glenwood controlled the game early on and went into halftime with an 11 point lead. Mount Airy came stormng back in the third quarter by connectng on 3 - three pointers, outscoring Glenwood 13-5 in that period. Glenwood stepped it up in the final quarter, converting on turnovers caused by their defensive pressure and cruised in to a 17 point margin of victory. Glenwood was led by Troy Spurrier with 13 and Jeff Jacoby with 11. Gavin McTavish and Ryan Tate paced Mount Airy with 12 and 7 points respectively.

Glenwood jayvee moved to 9 and 0 in the Peidmont Division and 13 and 2 overall. In a slow paced game that took less than 45 minutes from start to finish. Glenwood took the early lead and kept Mt. Airy off the scoreboard until mid-way through the second quarter, where the score was 21 to 2. With the two teams facing different challenges, Mt. Airy playing with only 6 players and Glenwood trying to rotate 12, the 2 teams played even in the seocnd half. Mt. Airy outscored Glenwood 14 to 8 in the 4th quarter as they never gave up. Scoring for Glenwood was Russell Jarboe with 8, Colin Randle and John Gilliland with 5, and L.J. Finney and Spencer Wilson with 4 each. For Mt. Airy Matt Dee led the way with 6, Jake Poten added 5 while Brandon Quinn and Jake Quinn chipped in 4 each.

CRESTWOOD, BALLENGER CREEK SPLIT IN ANNUAL TUSCARORA TUSSLE - 02/09/08

Kenny Hagins hit a three pointer at the buzzer to lead Crestwood jayvee to a dramatic 45-42 overtime victory over Ballenger Creek. Ballenger Creek jumped out to a quick first quarter lead behind the clutch shooting of Andy Shannon. Crestwood worked their way back to trail by two at the half 18-16. The second half turned out to be a great half of basketball with both teams battling to a 39-39 tie at the end of regulation. Tommy Tran hit some clutch free throws to give Ballenger the lead in overtime. Crestwood managed to get the ball back with seconds remaining before Hagins hit the game winner. Andy Shannon had a terrific game for Ballenger hitting for 19 points. Tio Johnson led Crestwood with 18 points, and a good defensive effort on the boards.

In an equally entertaing varsity match, before a huge crowd at Tuscarora High School, Ballenger was able to hold off Crestwood for a 57-50 victory. An evenly played first quarter found Ballenger with a 12-10 lead. A great performance by Mark Hoy gave Ballenger a 21-13 lead at the half. Crestwood battled back to trail by seven at the end of the third quareter. A great defensive effort allowed Crestwood to cut the lead to two in the fourth, before Ballenger hit some clutch free throws to secure the win. Kevin Kidwell had an outstanding game for Crestwood with 25 points. Deonte Taylor also played solid for the Cavs, and chipped in with 15 points. Ballenger Creek was led by Hoy who finished the game with 20 points, and Ali Aziz who sored 17 points, including some big free throws down the stretch.

Monocacy boys varsithy tea`ams won its fourth games in a row defeated Windsor Knoll 44-31.This was a great teams win lead by Paris Price with 15 points along with 11 points from James Harris and 10 rebounds Tony Dowy had 8 points 7 rebound also. Paul McLister had a great floor games.Windsor Knoll was lead by Tucker Morgan with 10 points.

Monocacy defeats Winsor Knolls jayvee 39 to 37 on overtime. Monocacy led for the majority of the night and even managed to build a double-digit lead in the second half, but the Hawks rallied behind the play of Isaac Apea, Riley Spain, and Charlie Norris to tie the score at 34 as Isaac Apea knocked down a three pointer to tie with 14 secords to play and had a chance to win in regulation after a turnover by the Mustanges but the shot at the buzzer came up short. Scorers for the Mustangs where Carney Bernard 14 points, Zach Pettrille 11 points none more crucial then the mid range jumper in overtime to put the Mustanges up three with under a minute left in the overtime, Chris Sloan 9 points, Michael Omenchenko three points, and Phil Reese rounded out the scoring with two points.

Walkersille Varsity 41 Brunswick 20. With 10 players contributing to the team's score, led by Ben Bandy's 7 points, the home team Lions defeated a skilled Brunswick squad 41 - 20. Both teams executed well, but the Lions were consistent and were able to extend it's early lead. The Railroader's were led by Geoffrey Davis with 8 points, with Collin Nusbaum (6 points), Dallas Darling (4 points) and Brandon Eyler (2 points) also contributing. Additional Lions scoring of note was Zach Wathen's and Jacob Miller's 6 points each, and Alex Rodriguez's 5 points. Matt Hawkins (4 points and 6 boards) and Jay Dennis (4 points) were solid in the paint.

JV Brunswick 42 Walkersville 26 The Lions were led by Paulin Atemekeng's 13 points but couldn't stay with the quick Railroaders. Brunswick led at the half 14-13 but outscored the Lions 24-11 to finish the game. Brunswick was led in scoring by Chance Smith and Joseph Fawley with 10 points each.

Glenwood varsity-68 Taneytown-19. Justin Brown led Taneytown with 10 points. J. Jacoby led Glenwood with 25 points.

Glenwood defeated Taneytown jayvee 69-14. Colin Randle led Glenwood with 14 points while Nick Crabil had 11 and Nick Napolitano chipped in 10. Chris Vazquez led Taneytown with 8 points.

Catoctin Varsity edged out MSD in a thriller, winning the game 37 to 35. In a game which experienced several lead changes, with neither team leading by more than five points at any time throughout the game, Catoctin was able to pull into the lead in the fourth quarter and hold on for the win. MSD had the ball on the last possession and had a good look for the tying basket but the ball rattled out to give the Cougars the victory. Catoctin was led by their guard play, with Aaron Barker leading the Cougars with 13 points and Garrett Sprankle adding eight more. Post players Ryan Delauter and Richard Doane chipped in four points each. MSD was led by by the Steingieser brothers with Jessie Steingieser pouring in 24 points and James Steingieser adding 8 more.

Catoctin used a strong full court press to jump out to an early 14 point lead and the host Cougars defeated MSD 57-26 in JV action Saturday night. All 11 players scored for Catoctin, led by C.J. Jenkins with 11 points. Jackson Steinly and Brandon Tyner scored 8 points a piece for the Cougars. Evan Kurth led the Orioles with 9 points. Cody Simmons and Austin Cerasoli each chipped in 5 points.

After a slow start by both teams, the West Frederick Cadets Varsity squad opened up a nine point half time lead on TJ with pressure defense and fast break points. The Cadets racked up 21 3rd quarter points, with balanced scoring from seven players, and went on to win 57-36. West Frederick was led by Jalen Gee with 14 points, Nigel Fender with 12, and Connor Corbitt with 10. The Patriots fought hard, and were led by strong inside play by Ken Wimms (15 points) with help from Steven Crim (8) and Arman Ghaffari (7).

West Frederick JV beat TJ 48-30 With a up-temp first half. Leading the way for West Frederick was Demorae Townsend with 13 pts.Followed by Michael Tettch 11 pts and Silverio Sambula , Christian James each had 6 pts . TJ jv was led by Jack Atmonavage with 9 pts and Pablo Uterra with 7 pts. It was a strong all round team win by West Frederick.

Folly Quarter opened a 10-3 first quarter lead only to see Mt.Airy battle back and trail at the half 19-16. In a defensive third quarter, that only had three field goals, Mt.Airy was able to tie the game at 23. The fourth quarter scoring picked as both teams traded baskets in a much faster game. Nic Cimino's hustle and rebounding and a timely 3 pointer by Chad Ringold helped Mt.Airy take a six point lead with less than a minute to play but Folly Quarter was not done, a three pointer by Logan Dubbe,who led Folly Quarter with eight, cut the lead to 39-35, after a Mt.Airy turnover Folly Quarter was unable to score and the Bulldogs prevailed. Dan Grimes added seven points and Evan Richardson and Davis Grove six points a piece for Falcons. Gavin McTavish led all scorer's with 10 points and Ryan Tate finished with nine points for Mt.Airy.

POOLESVILLE JAYVEE PICKS UP BIG WIN IN SPLIT WITH CRESTWOOD - 02/07/08

Poolesville and Crestwood varsity battled in a close game, with Crestwood able to hold off Poolesville for the 35-31 win. Crestwood jumped out to a quick eight point lead but Poolesville battled back to tie the score at 21-21 at the half. Poolesville took the lead in the third and Crestwood had to come from behind and hold off the valiant Falcons. Dylan Bourque had a good game and led the Falcons with 13 points. Crestwood was paced by Kevin Kidwell and Deonte Taylor with 12 and 11 points respectively. Demontrez Palmer came off the bench to chip in with eight points.

In a very close well played jayvee game, Poolesville was able to pull off a 48-42 victory. The game was tight throughout, with Crestwood holding a slim 25-24 lead at the half. Poolesville used some clutch shooting to come back for the win. Alex Levine played well for Crestwood and paced the Cavs with 12 points. Josh Wolmack dominated inside and led all scorers, with 19 points for the Falcons.

West Frederick won a Varsity game against Ballenger Creek 46 to 41. West Frederick led at the half 19 to 14. Ballenger came back to take the lead in the fourth quarter only to have West Frederick take the lead back at the 3:00 mark. Theophile Remy hit a three pointer to add a 5 point cushion for West Frederick. West Frederick was led by Nigel Fender with 16 points and Jalen Gee with 15 points. Ali Aziz and John Cappolella both had 11 points for Ballenger Creek.

Ballenger Creek beat West Frederick 61 to 47 in the JV game. Ballenger Creek jump out to a 20 to 10 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. Ballenger was led by there big man Tommy Tran with 23 points and Ryan Grant added 10 points and 8 assist. West Frederick was led by Demorae Townsend with 14 points.

WALKERSVILLE DOUBLES UP OAKDALE IN ANTIETAM TWINBILL - 02/06/08

Walkersville Varsity 45 Oakdale 39. Behind the "double-double" of Jacob Miller (14 points, 10 rebounds) and the outside shooting of Matt Guyton (11 points), the home team Lions secured the win against a determined Oakdale Eagles squad. Walkersville led through-out, but could not pull away from the Eagles as the visitors hit 5 three pointers, two by point guard Jan Retana in the 4th quarter to keep within striking distance. Juan finished as Oakdale's high scorer with 11 points, with support from teammates Ben Bowman and Clay Aldredge, both with 8 points. The Lions scoring was rounded out by Zach Wathen's 6, and he also contributed 9 rebounds to the Lions cause.

JV Walkersville 44 Oakdale 27. Keeping Oakdale scoreless in the first quarter proved to be enough for the host Lions to seal the victory. Oakdale's Payne Hebron led all scorers with his strong inside play and 12 points. Michael Allewein and Donovan Burriss chipped in 6 each. Walkersville was led by the inside play of Jason Trott with 11 points and the perimeter play from Paulin Atemekeng with 9 points. The Lions had scoring from eight different players.

CRESTWOOD JAYVEES, MIDDLETOWN VARSITY STAY PERFECT IN ANTIETAM ACTION - 02/03/08

Crestwood beat Brunswick's jayvees in overtime, 39-37 in an exciting game. Chance Smith had 12 for Brunswick and Joe Fawley 6. For Crestwood, Mark Levine had 10 and Chris Owens 17.

Brunswick lost to Crestwood at home in a dissapointing varsity effort, 58-40. Ian Fisher had 11 for Brunswick, while Collin Nusbaum and Dallas Darling had 7. Kevin Kidwell led all scorers with 14 points. Taylor Hysong had 12 and Deonte Taylor had 8 for Crestwood.

While Middletown's Varsity held a steady lead for the duration of their 42-25 win over Poolesville's Varsity, the game was hard-fought and played with intensity by both teams. Ben Lewis hit for 11 points to lead the senior Knights. In a tale of two halves, Michael Pritts scored all seven of his points in the first half for Middletown while teammate Zach Fontenot scored all seven of his points in the second half. Forward Ean Hill-Addison led Poolesville with eight points and fellow Falcon Erik Jansson scored six points.

The Middletown JV held Poolesville to just six field goal total in the Knight's 24-22 win at Poolesville. Zach Welch came up big for Middletown with 10 points. Teammate Howie Kalamets chipped in six points. Poolesville's Collin Turner had five of the Poolesville buckets. He finished with 11 points. Kirby Carmack, Niko Micheals, and Brian Dillon contributed three points each for the Falcons.

West Frederick varsity outlasted Linganore Sunday in an exciting up tempo game. From start to finish each team made runs to shift momentum back and forth. West Frederick looked as if they were going to pull away in the 2nd quarter as they led 19-10. A three point shot from Jake Milford ignited the Lancers as they ended the half on a 11-3 run. Lingnore came out in the second half with the momentum and took their first lead four minutes in 32-30. West Frederick then turned on the defensive pressure to outscore the Lancers 11-0 to end the quarter. The 4th quarter was competitive but the Lancers could never get within six points despite hitting four three point shots. The final score was 55-46 West Fredercik. Jalen Gee, Nigel Fender and Connor Corbitt all reached double figures for West Frederick scoring 19, 13, and 10 point respectively. Matt Freibaum, Luke Jackson, and Ryan Hall had 9 points each for the Lancers.

West Frederick JV beat the host Lancers by a score of 50-38. Linganore had no answer for the inside game of West Frederick's Demorae Townsend who scored a game high 18 points all from the free throw line (4) or within the paint (14). Silverio Sambula, playing great defense, also contributed on the offensive end tallying 12 points mostly on steals and transition baskets. The Lancers were led by Clay Conner's 12 points. Tyler Anderson added 10 points for the Lancers.

Monocacy up ended St Johns in the varsity game 43-30.Monocacy was lead by Travis Phelps with 11points follhow by Paul McLister with 10 points. Monococy second and third units play and great game today.St Johns was lead by Ben Erichsen with 14points along with 7 points from Ron Canova.

Monocacy jayvee defeated St. John's 71 -18. The Mustangs leading scorer was Chris Sloan with 16 points, Zach Petrill 11, Phil Reese 10, Aaron Mercer and Carney Bernard 8 points each. Michel Omenchenko was big factor on the boards as he pulled down 12 rebounds and had 11 assists. Bryan Thompson led St John's on scoring with eight points, followed by Zach Roskowinsky with five.

WINDSOR KNOLLS HANDS URBANA FIRST JAYVEE LOSS, UHAWKS TAKE VARSITY GAME TO REMAIN LEAGUE'S ONLY UNBEATEN - 02/02/08

The Hawks from Windsor Knolls handed the Urbana Hawks their first defeat of the season in a thrilling contest. The WK Hawks came out strong scoring the first 8 points of the game forcing Urbana to use an early time out. The teams both played aggressive man to man defense and WK took a 19-11 lead at the half. Urbana roared back at the start of the 3rd quarter forcing turnovers and scored the first 6 points cutting the margin to 2. Riley Spain scored on a driving layup to get WK Hawks back on track. The teams traded baskets and Urbana cut the 7 point half time lead down to 32-28 at the end of 3 quarters. Issac Apea was a force both on offense and defense. His strong drives to the hoop and his outside shooting kept WK in the lead. Zack Thomas from Urbana had a outstanding night hitting long range jumpers and led his team with 12. Brandon Wharton pounded the boards and provided more offense for Urbana with 10 points. Kevin Heine was big on the boards and finished with 5 points. Jonah Loveless had a solid game also finishing with 5. The game was still in the balance in the 4th quarter when Riley Tyeryar hit 2 big free throws in the final 30 seconds to put the game away at 41-36. Tyeryar and Riley Spain provided excellent guard play. Spain's aggressive defense forced turnovers and he contributed 5 points. Kyle Singer hit some big shots and finished with 9. Charlie Norris came off the bench to providing excellent rebounding. Issac Apea lead WK with 12.

Urbana Middle 62 Windsor Knolls 54. The urbana hawks used the outside shooting of Chris Disuillo (10 ptS) in the first quater to build a half time lead of 16. In the second quater the Hawks were lead with balanceds scoring by James Jawoeski nad Matt Lane with 6 pts each. The Winsindsor Knolw Hawks fought back in the second half lead by Russell Lohor with 9 points but felll short in the end.

Folly Quarter JVs beat St. John’s JVs 40-34. Folly Quarter jumped to a large lead in first half by using a pressing defense which created many turnovers by St. John’s. The score at half time was 29-11. But, St. John’s fought back in the second half with a tenacious defense and closed the lead. Folly Quarter finally finished them off in the end. St. John’s was led by Jacob Bernstein and Matthew Colket with 7 and 6 points respectively. Folly Quarter was led by a Jack Cook with 13 points.

In the varsity game, FQMS played aggressive defense defeating a determined St. John's squad 49 - 30. FQMS opened the game playing a patient game on offense while capitalizing on turnovers to take a 13 - 2 1st quarter lead and led at the half 21 - 8. St. John's played good defense in the 3rd quarter and at one point cut the lead to 8 point before FQMS pulled away towards the end of the 3rd quarter for good. St. John's was led by Buckey Erichson , Jake Garcia and Ryan Milburn all with 7 points. FQMS balanced attack was lead by Davis Grove with 10 points, while Gary Franks had 9 points (all three pointers) and Michael Nicastro with 9. points.

Mt Airy defeated Taneytown 54-24 Varsity. Gavin McTavish led Mt Airy with 17 pts and Ryan Tate had 16 pts to lead Mt Airy to the victory. Justin Brown led Taneytown with 8 points.

Mt Airy defeated Taneytown 44-19 Jayvee. Jack Quinn and zachary Weaver led Mt Airy with 11 points each. Chris Vasquez led Taneytown with 5 points while Joey Angell chipped in 4 points.

In a match-up between T.J. and Monocacy, Monocacy jumped out to a 16-3 first quarter lead, behind Paul Mclister's 14 points. T.J was led by Kendle Pitts' 19 points, and tuff defense. At the half Monocacy led by 14. Paris Price and Tony Dowy each scored 10 points for Monocacy. Ken Wimm's dumped in 12 points and his pressure kept T.J. in the game. In the end Monocacy won this battle 48-37.

Monocacy JV used a stifling defense to beat TJ 43-9. The Mustangs took charge early with an aggressive, trapping zone limiting the Patriots looks on offense. Monocacy was led in scoring by Zack Petrill and Chris Sloan who each had 10 points. Carney Bernard chipped 8. On a tough night for the Pats, Jack Atmonavage had 3 while Pablo Utrera and Uvan Stewart each had 2.

Oakdale Varsity came out strong versus MSD to take a 17-4 first quarter lead behind six points from John Dearstine. Oakdale kept the pressure up and took a 33-11 halftime lead. MSD battled back strong in the second half with a great team effort and was able to cut the 22-point lead down to 13, but could get no closer as Oakdale went 8-for-11 from the foul line in the closing minutes to seal a 56-39 victory. Foul shooting hurt the Orioles as they went 6-for-20 from the line. Juan Retana paced the Eagles with 17 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals. Matt Myers came off the bench to nail three hree-pointers and total 14 points. Ben Bowman added four assists and two steals. James Steinger led MSD with 10 points. Derek Frank added nine points. Tyler Lewis and Jessie Steingieser each scored eight points.

Oakdale jayvee used their smothering defense and control of the offensive and defensive boards to seal an easy victory against visiting MSD. Oakdale held MSD to only eight first half points while producing 30 points on the offensive end. Oakdale came out strong again in the 3rd quarter and used their defense to force turnovers and get easy buckets. The final score was Oakdale 62 and MSD 17. Payne Hebron had a terrific game for Oakdale amassing a triple-double. Hebron was the games leading scorer finishing with 12 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 steals. Seth Myers had another strong offensive game finishing with eight points for Oakdale. Twelve of Oakdale’s thirteen player roster got in the score book in the game. Jake Bonheyo and Cody Simmons had four points each for MSD.

MIDDLETOWN VARSITY, CRESTWOOD JAYVEES GAIN KEY WINS IN SPLIT - 01/27/08

The varsity game between Middletown and Crestwood was a close battle. In the end Middletown was able to pull out a 45-37 victory. The game was close throughout. The score was knotted at 10 at the end of the first quarter and knotted again at 17-17 at the half. Crestwood was unable to take advantage of some easy looks, and Middletown capitalized with good shooting to lead by three heading into the fourth quarter. Middletown used clutch foul shooting and good rebounding to hold off the Cavs. Middletown was led by Zachary Fontenot with 15 points. Ben Lewis and Logan Beckner each chipped in with nine points. Crestwood was paced by Kevin Kidwell and Deonte Taylor with 10 points apiece. Taylor Hyssong added nine points for the Cavs.

Middletown and Crestwood battled through four quarters and an overtime before Crestwood could pull away for the 48-45 victory. This was a very evenly played game with both teams putting on runs only to see the other battle back. Crestwood held a slim 20-19 lead at the half. Middletown got off to a good start in the second half and led by as many as seven points before Crestwood came back to take a lead of their own. The game was tied at the end of regulation and Crestwood used good defense in overtime to preserve the victory. Middletown was led in scoring by Jacob Bolton with 18 points. Jonah Meredith paced the Cavs with 14 points.

Oakdale jayvee jumped out to a quick lead in the jayvee game against Taneytown and never looked back. The tenacious Oakdale defense held Taneytown to only four points in the first half. The final score was Oakdale 42 and Taneytown 16. Payne Hebron scored 12 points for Oakdale and was the high scorer for the game. Seth Myers also chipped in eight points for Oakdale. Dieudonne Mwisenza scored six points for Taneytown.

URBANA VARSITY, POOLESVILLE JAYVEES PICK UP KEY WINS TOWARD TOURNAMENT SEEDING RACES - 01/27/08

The Urbana Varsity brought its undefeated record to Middletown and dominated the Knights for 4 quarters. When it was all said and done Urbana took the game 46-39. Urbana was quicker, lead by Matt Lane and his 11 points, and shot the ball much better, lead by Thomas Utt’s 10 points, and despite missing its top rebounder even out rebounded Middletown from start to finish. Zack Fontenot was a bright spot for the Knights with 15 points. Urbana played a well coached press defense and continued the pressure the Knights in the half court on the way to their very solid road victory.

Urbana jayvee edged Middletown 49 to 46 in an exciting competition with lots of scrappy heads-up play by both sides. The quickness of the undefeated Urbana squad was immediately evident. Howie Kalamets was the Middletown catalyst in the first quarter with zealous rebounding and multiple steals. Zach Welch and Philip Addington added nice scores and Zach Thomas scored off an excellent drive through 3 players. The quarter ended with a tie score of 12-12. In the 2nd quarter Brendan Wharton scored 4 quick points with 2 coming off a great offensive rebound. Kevin Heine scored a 3-pointer. Jacob Bolton scored off an excellent drive to make it 19-16 Urbana. Thomas Evich scored off a nice offensive rebound. Wharton scored 2 more off a good offensive rebound. Darren Ambush scored off a fast break. The score was 27-20 with Urbana leading at the half. Jonah Loveless had a terrific drive in the early 3rd quarter. Ambush dropped in a 3-pointer. Middletown played strong defense and Kalamets blocked 2 shots. Jacob Bolton went 1 on 1 on a fast break and captured a skillful bucket. He added a 3-pointer and Middletown climbed within 5 at the end of the 3rd. The 4th quarter saw lots of nail-biting action. Wharton was hard to stop as he scored underneath with hustle enough to beat the defense. Ambush had another super drive. Howie Kalamets came up big in the 4th quarter with 9 points to spearhead the Middletown comeback. Jack Panther scored off a skillful drive. Jonah Loveless had an excellent drive and left-handed score. Heine lodged a clutch 10-footer. Zach Thomas sunk a sweet 5 foot hook shot and time ran out on the Middletown comeback. The Urbana scorers were Wharton-13, Heine-11, Ambush-9, Thomas-9, Jonah Loveless-3, Josh Loveless-2 and Zach Woodward with 2. For Middletown it was Kalamets-14, Welch-13, Bolton-11, Addington-4, Panther-2 and Thomas Evich, the hustling big man with 2.

Poolesville jayvee defeated Glenwood in overtime by a score of 42 to 43. The two high scoring teams played at a slower pace as Poolesville lead at the end of the first period 10 to 7. Glenwood tried to push the tempo with their press but failed to generate any turn overs and seemed lethargic on both ends. Glenwood had more success in a 2-3 zone as they opened up a 21 to 13 half time lead. In the third quarter Glenwood opened up a 15 point lead before becoming complacent and lazy in the 2-3 zone. That was all the opening Poolesville needed as they cut the Glenwood lead to 32 to 26 going into the 4th quarter and then outscored them 8 to 2 to force the over time. In over time Poolesville built a 6 point lead before Glenwood cut it to 1 but could come no closer. Poolesville was lead by Collin Turner with 14 and Kirby Carmack with 11. Glenwood was lead by Colin Randle with 15 and Tomi Fadiran with 10.

Glenwood varsity bounced back from their loss to Brunswick last week by winning their second straight game Sunday, defeating Poolesville 39-24. Glenwood never trailed in this game, jumping out to an early 8-0 lead and extending it to 16 points by halftime. Poolesville played a tough game but had difficulty dealing with the full court pressure applied by Glenwood which led to many fast break points off of turnovers. Glenwood was lead by Troy Spurrier who had 13 points. Alexis Chahine and Joe Tolbert each added 7 points. Top scorers for Poolesville were Chris Oyer with 12 points and Billy Cartwright with 5.

St. Johns traveled to Linganore. The varsity game was competitive and hard fought throughout. The Lancers used a few runs at the end of each of the first three quarters to take good size leads. St. Johns had alot of fight left in the 4th quarter. St. Johns scored 19 of their 39 total points in the games final quarter. In the end it was too little too late as the Lancers shot 7 for 8 from the line to close the game out 50-39. Matt Freibaum and Stephen Washabaugh scored 13 and 10 points respectively for the Lancers. Echiehsen led the way for St. Johns with 11.

The JV Lancers cruised to a 44-15 victory over the visiting Vikings. After a slow paced first quarter the JV Lancers held a slim 2 point lead, 4-2 over the JV Vikings. The Lancers, however, kick started their offense in the 2nd quarter and opened up a 20-7 halftime advantage. The third quarter was similar to the previous with the Lancers outscoring the Vikings 13-2 behind leading scorer Clay Conner's 7 points in the quarter. Clay Finished with 13 points for the game. Garrett Fanning had 10 for the Lancers and the Vikings were led by Patrick Doherty who finished with 4 points.

Brunswick varsity jumped out to a 20-0 first quarter lead and finished with a 60-14 win over Taneytown at home on Sunday. Brunswick played outstanding defense and had balanced scoring throughout the game. Brunswick was led by Ian Fisher with 16 and Geoffrey Davis with 11. Rafael Medrano added 8 and Brandon Eyler and Blaine Price had 6 points each. For Taneytown four players had 3 points each. They are Justin Brown, Jordan Storey, Brandon Redhi, and John Rill.

Brunswick JV also defeated Taneytown 49-11. Zach Hossler led Brunswick with 11. Cody Wenner and Brandon Axline each had 6. For Taneytown, Joey Ansell and Dieldonne Mwisenza had 4 each.

Windsor Knoll's Varsity broke open a close game at halftime to defeat MSD 43-24. Windsor Knoll led at halftime by four, 21-17. WK played a strong final quarter by score of 43-24. James Steingieser (10 points and four rebounds) led the Orioles and Jesse Steinsgieser contributed eight points and nine rebounds. For WK, Russell Lohr led the team with 12 points. Thomas Stuart made 10 points.

Windsor knolls jayvee beat msd 58 to 12. Riley Tyeryar lead windsor knolls with 9 points. Jonathan Stein and kevin Haaf contrbuted with 8 points each for windsor knolls team. Cody simmons and jake bonheyo lead msd team with 5 points each.

VISITORS ROUGH UP HOSTS FOR SWEEPS IN FIVE OF SIX DOUBLEHEADERS - 01/26/08

Crestwood and West Frederick fought a hard defensive battle in the first half with Crestwood coming out on top. Crestwood used a packed in 2-3 zone to slow down the Cadets and took a 19- 16 lead into the half. In the second half the Cadets were able to get some easy buckets off turnovers and missed shots to move them head of Crestwood. The final score was West Frederick 52 and Crestwood 30. The Cadets leading scorer was Jalen Gee with 13 pts. Nigel Fender chipped in 12pts, Ryan Kennedy had 9, Jarel English scored 8 and Tyler Pollard had 3pts. Crestwood was lead by Kevin Kidwell with 9pts while Taylor Hyssong and Deonte Taylor scored 8.

Crestwood defeated West Frederick 44-36, ending their 5 game wining streak. The Cavs leading scorer was Chad Owens with 18 points, both Theodore Johnson and Mark Levine followed with 7 each. Leading scorer for the Cadets was Demorae' Townsend with 11 points, Christian James with 7, Deontae' Diggs with 5, Silvero Sambula added 4, Johnathan King added 3, Trace Russ and Leonard Smith both added 2.

Linganore defeated MSD 44 to 28 in a varsity game. Linganore was led by Freibaum with 10 points and Jenning with 9 points. Hall and Washabaugh each chipped in with 6 points. MSD was led by Jesse Steingieser with 12 points, 3 blocks and 7 rebounds. Derek Frank had 7 points, Zack Barron had 5 points and James Steingieser had 4 points and 6 rebounds.

MSD JV lost to Linganore 21 to 44. The first half score was 11 to 17. Darrius Doe led the team with 7 points followed by Cody Simmons and Austin Cerasoli with 6 points each. Clay Conner of Linganore scored 13 points and Kyle Nicolet 12 points.

Monocacy defeated Oak-dale in the varsity game 54-48. Paul McLister lead the Muatages with 16 along with 13 from Paris Price . James Harris also had 12 rebounds and 8points for the Mustages.Ben Bowman lead Oak-dale with 17 points.

In a game that saw Brunswick jump out to an 18-9 first quarter lead, the T.J. Patriots only trailed by four at the half (28-24). Leading the way for Brunswick, was Ian Fisher (54) with 12 of his 23 points, comming in the first half. Blaine Price (34) and Geoffrey Davis (53), each with 8 points, rounded out Brunswick's top scorer's. T.J. was led by Ken Wimms (1), with 23 points, including four 3 point field goals. The Patriots' George Falconer (2), (8 points), provided tough defensive pressure, helping to keep the game close. In the end, Brunswick defeated the Patriots, with the final score 49-42.

In a slugfest Brunswick's JV team out lasted TJ by a score of 41-37. There were numerous lead changes through out the game with TJ holding on to a 1 point lead at half 17-16. The Railroaders' turned up the heat in the 3rd quarter to take a six point lead. The 4th quarter became a scoring battle between the strong inside game of Brunswick's Chance Smith and the outside game of the Patriots' Jack Atmonavage. Smith had 9 in the 4th quarter and Atmonavage had 10. Brunswick held a slim 2 point lead with 16 seconds left when Joseph Fawley hit 2 clutch free throws to increase the Railroaders' lead to the final margin of 4 points. Brunswick was led by Chance Smith with 15 points an Nathanial Eiben with 10. Jack Atmonavage led the Patriots with a game high 19 points while Juwan Addison hit the boards hard and chipped 7 points as well.

Mt. Airy Varsity avenged an early season loss to Catoctin by beating the Cougars on the road, 43 to 32, to even the series. Catoctin got off to a fast start and took a seven point lead into half. In the second half, however, Mt. Airy got hot from the outside and drained a series of threes to tie and then pull ahead and hold on for the win. Carson Dugstad led all scorers with 13 points, followed by Ryan Tate with 11 points and Gavin McTavish with 10. Catoctin was led by Garrett Sprankle and Aaron Barker with six points each. Brad Little and TJ Raubaugh also had 4 points each for the Cougars.

In a back and forth game, Mt. Airy dominated the second overtime period and pulled away from host Catoctin 52-42 in JV action. Jake Pooton scored 19 points for Mt.Airy and Matthew Dee and Kyle MacIvor scored 10 and 8 points respectively. Alex Kennedy led the Cougars with 13 points. Brandon Tyner and C.J. Jenkins each scored 9 points.

Monacacy varsity jumped out to a quick 20-4 lead then withstood a furious 4th quarter Oakdale comeback to secure a 54-48 victory. Paul McClisler led the Mustangs with 16 points. Paris Price scored 15 points and Tyler Specht added ten points. Ben Bowman paced Oakdale with 17 points on five three-pointers. Juan Retana played a good game with seven points, nine assists and two steals while committing only one turnover.

The Monocacy Mustangs defeats Oakdale JV 55-17. Behind a strong first half, led by Carney Bernard's nine points (15 for game), and Zach Petrill's six points (10 for game). The second half scoring was rounded out with Deandre Brown three points, Michael Lango six points, Phillip Reese eight points, Michel Omenchenko two points along with a overall game rebounding, Arron Mercer two points, Mitchell Kloos two points, and Chris Sloan seven points. Scoring for Oakdale was Michael Allwein three points, Donovan burriss two points, John Bush two points, Payne Hebron six points, Seth Myers four points, led in scoring by.

Urbana jumped to a 17 - 0 lead early in the 1st quarter as FQMS could not solve the pressure defense. FQMS fought back to within 17 - 6 at the end of the quarter but Urbana again turned up the pressure to lead at half by a 33 - 16 count. The 2nd half was evenly matched as Urbana won 54 - 39. Urbana was lead by their outstanding center Michael Madaras who had 16 points and dominated inside before leaving with an injury in the 4th quarter. Matthew Lane and James Jaworski added 15 and 8 points respectively. FQMS was led by Davis Grove with 13 points while Logan Dubbe added 8.

Urbana JV beat Folly Quarter JV 44-37. Urbana built a large led after the first quarter 16-4. Folly Quarter fought back and was trailing 33-29 after 3 quarters. In a well played game, Urbana outlasted Folly Quarter in the end. Urbana had a strong performance from Kevin Heine with 14 points. Folly Quarter had balanced scoring with 9 players in the scoring column. Folly Quarter was led by Brian Mobley and Kevin Rosenthal with 7 and 6 points respectively. John Kum came off the bench with 5 points and 7 rebounds in a strong performance

BALLENGER CREEK, WALKERSVILLE SPLIT A PAIR; GLENWOOD VARSITY TOPS CRESTWOOD - 01/24/08

After a slowstart and a low scoring 3 quarters, the Bulldogs led 8 to 4 going into the half and 17-10 after 3 periods. The Bulldogs poured on the offense and scored 21 points in the final period of the game to go on and take the varsity win over Walkersville with a score of 39-27. Game high scorer was the Bulldogs Ernie Burrell who had 10 points and teammates Mark Hoy added seven points and John Cappolella added six points for the winners. The Lions were led by Jameson Detweiler with nine points and Jacob Miller added eight points and Devin Bell chipped in six points.

After a close contest for the first two quarters, Walkersville led going into the half 24-21. The Lions outscored the Bulldogs in the 3rd quarter 11-6 and the Lions went on and took the win over the JV Bulldogs with a score of 50-40. High Scorer for the Lions was Paulin Atemekeng with the Lucky 13 points and Demetrious Royster added 12 points and teammate Alex Detweiler chipped in eight points. The Bulldogs were led by teammates Tommy Tran and Kwaveon McDonald who also had Lucky 13 points a piece for the Bulldogs.

Glenwood varsity defeated Crestwood 43-39. Glenwoods hustle and rebounding, both defensive and offensive, proved to be the difference as they held on for the victory. Crestwood led at the half 16-15. Glenwood outworked the Cavs in the third and led by as many as seven. Crestwood made a nice comeback, but could not overcome some costly mistakes. Glenwood was led by Troy Spurrier and Anthony Arnette, who scored 12 points each. Crestwood was led by Deonte Taylor who finished with 16 points. Donte Snowden and Taylor Hyssong each chipped in with eight points for the Cavs.

CADETS TAKE PAIR OF SINGLE-DIGIT DECISIONS AGAINGST HOST LIONS - 01/23/08

A physical struggle through out, West Frederick's varsity defeated the home team Lions 38 - 31. Two factors that were instrumental in the West Frederick victory was the first half perimeter shooting of point guard Ryan Kennedy (8 points), including a buzzer beater after penetration and kick-out by standout Jalen Gee, putting the visitors up 5 at the half. The other factor was the 4 turnovers by the Lions in the last minute of the game, after the lead had been cut to 2. Jalen Gee of West Frederick led all scorers with 11, and teammate Nigel Fender added 10, mostly on penetration/pull-up jumpers in the paint. The Lions were led by post man Zach Wathen with 8 points, with support from team mate Jacob Miller's 6 points and 11 rebounds.

JV West Frederick 35 Walkersville 32. Early turnovers proved costly for the host Lions. The Cadets led at the half 24-16. Walkersville defense held West Frederick to 6 third quarter points and 5 fourth quarter points. Finishing on a 16-7 run proved too little too late. Lion Paulin Atemekeng led all scorers with 14 points. The Cadets were led by the tandom of Micheal Tetteh (10 points) and Demore Townsend (10 points).

MIDDLETOWN VARSITY WINS 11th WITHOUT A LOSS, POOLESVILLE JAYVEE GOES TO 10-1 IN SPLIT WITH BRUNSWICK - 01/21/08

Linganore Middletown's Varsity a fierce challenge. Middletown lead 12-4 after one quarter and 18-13 at half in a low scoring physical game. After 3 it was 30-21 Knights but the Lancers rallied late and cut it to 2 in the forth quarter. In the end the Knights held on a grabbed a 40-33 win. Ben Lewis was all over the court and tallied a team high 12 points while Zack Fontenot chipped in 11 and Chase Lebetta 8. The Lancers would lead by Tyler Beckwitt and his game high 14 points and Ryan Hall’s 11 points.

Middletown jayvee edged Linganore 35 to 32 in an amazing contest which saw a heroic 4th quarter comeback by Linganore led by Clay Conner who scored 3 3-pointers in the final period. The 1st quarter saw Garet Fanwg hit a nice 10 footer. Jack Panther hit a 3-pointer and Middletown led by 6 at the buzzer. In the 2nd quarter Ian Grife added 2 points under the basket. Ben Racz went 2 for 4 from the foul line and displayed intense hustle. Brian Schumm pulled down multiple rebounds with heads up play. Nick Geurley displayed textbook hustle under the offensive board. Tim Schumacher had a nice steal and Middletown led by 14 at the half. Jacob Bolton scored off an inbound pass and Nick Geurley made an excellent penetration move to the basket and just missed the score. Conner shot an amazing left handed hook shot. Tyler Anderson showed big time hustle to cause a turnover. Clark Stieren got an offensive rebound and just missed the score as the ball got wedged behind the rim. Ben Racz scored off an inbound pass under pressure. Garrett Fanwg shot a 3-pointer and the quarter ended with Middletown up by 16 points. In the 4th quarter Linganore made an intense comeback led by Conner’s hot hand and fearless shooting. Philip Addington demonstrsated remarkable hustle. Justin Corbitt scored on an amazing turn-around effort. Howie Kalamets hit two clutch foul shots to put Middletown up by 4 points and then tied up the ball to give Middletown possession. The Lancers tied up the ball to regained possession with 2 seconds left and Tyler Anderson hit the rim as time ran out. The scorers for Linganore were Conner-15, Fanwg-8, Anderson-4, Geurley-3 and Corbitt-2. For Middletown it was Bolton-15, J. Panther-6, Racz and Kalamets with 4 each, Grife-3, Evich-2 and Addington-1.

Center Ian Fisher was virtually unstoppable as he racked up 23 points and 12 rebounds in Brunswick's 44-36 win over Poolesville. The Railroaders went 10 for 12 from the line in the fourth period as the Falcons started fouling to try to recover their early lead. Poolesville guard Brendan Carney led the home team with 12 points. Fellow Falcon Clint Cornell scored seven points and teammate Billy Cartwright hit for six. Brunswick also received scoring from 7th graders Dallas Darling (seven points) and Blaine Price and Collin Nusbaum (six points each).

Poolesville's JV went on a 15-5 run to start the second half to break open their close home game against Brunswick. The hot second half start, plus six fourth quarter points from Falcon guard Kirby Carmack (game high 16 points total) delivered a 49-38 win over the Railroaders. Joey Conrad led Brunswick with 18 points. Teammates Nick Thompson and Chance Smith chipped in five points each. Poolesville picked up scoring from Josh Womack (10 points), Collin Turner (eight points) and Andy Baker (seven points).

URBANA'S UNBEATENS SURVIVE TOUGH TESTS, GLENWOOD JAYVEES MOVE TO 10-1 - 01/20/08

Urbana varsity 25, Walkersville 20. In a slow paced game Urbana was able to lead from the first quarter to the end of the game. Matt Lane had 6 points and 8 steals for the Hawks. Thomas Utt also scored 6 points with 5 rebounds and James Jaworski scored 5 points and led the Hawks in rebounding with 7. The Lions were led by Jacob Miller with 7 points and Jay Dennis chipped in 4.

Urbana JV defeated Walkersville 32 - 27. The Hawks were led by Brendan Wharton with 10 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Walkersville's Jason Trott led all scorer's with 17 points. Urbana led at Half 18 - 8.

The Glenwood JV team jumped out to a 19-13 first quarter lead and scored 20 in the second quarter to cruise to a 64-41 victory over Brunswick. C. Randle had 18 for Glenwood and T. Fadrian had 9. For Brunswick Chase Roberts had 10 and Joey Conrad 7.

Brunswick jumped out to a 9-0 lead on Glenwood at Brunswick on Sunday and hung on for a 37-32 victory. Collin Nusbaum got Brunswick started with 3 straight 3 point shots to start the game and Brunswick led 13-8 after the first period. Troy Spurrier brought Glenwood back with 8 points in the second quarter and Brunswick led by 4 at the half, 20-16. Glenwood continued to play well in the second half by changing to zone presses. Glenwood led at the end of the third 27-26. Blaine Price got a huge steal and was intentionally fouled with 11 seconds left. He hit both free throws and Ian Fisher finished with a two to give Brunswick the victory. Blaine Price led Brunswick with 10, Collin Nusbaum had 9, and Ian Fisher 8. Troy Spurrier led Glenwood with 13 and Joseph Tolbert had 9.

In a game that was never close Mt Airy varsity ran away from Oakdale for a 52-28 victory. Ryan McTavish led Mt Airy with 23 points. Juan Retana led Oakdale with 15 points on 9 of 10 shooting from the foul line and 11 rebounds.

Oakdale and Mt. Airy jayvees played an exciting game. Oakdale jumped out to a quick lead allowing Mt. Airy only three points in the first quarter. Oakdale started the game in a full court press defense and utilized the quickness of the guards up front and the court awareness of the big men to force Mt. Airy to turn the ball over. Mt. Airy was able to overcome some of the Oakdale pressure in the second quarter and the teams went in to the locker rooms at the half with Oakdale leading 17 – 8. Oakdale came out strong in the third quarter and built a quick double-digit lead. Mt. Airy showed some of their pressure defense in the second half and cut the lead to 10 points early in the fourth quarter. In the end, it was Oakdale 37 and Mt. Airy 24. Luke Bartlett knocked down some key shots for Oakdale and finished as the top scorer with 10 points. John Bush came in and played aggressive at both ends of the floor for Oakdale and finished with six points. Mt. Airy was led by Jack Quinn with seven points followed by Zachary Weaver with six points.

Poolesville and Linganore faced off at Linganore High School. The Jr. Lancers used strong defensive presure and a balanced scoring attack to get their largest victory of the season. After taking a 10 point lead into the half, Linganore came out strong in the second half on a 16-4 run. The game was not in doubt entering the 4th quarter with Linganore leading 39-17. Luke Jackson, Stephen Washabaugh and Tyler Beckwith led the attack scoring 9,8 and 7 points respectively. Clint Cornell and Dylan Bourque each had 5 points for Poolesville. The final score read 46-26, Linganore.

In a very lopsided game the Poolesville Falcons beat the JV Lancers by a score of 52-25. The Falcons were led by leading scorer Colin Turner who tallied 18 points including 2 free throws in the last minute of the game. The Lancers were led by Garrett Fanning who had 8 points.

In what was a much closer game than the score would indicate, FQMS held off a hustling Catoctin team 55 - 41. The 1st quarter was low scoring with FQMS holding an 8 - 7 lead. In the 2nd quarter Catoctin hit numerous three point shots to take the lead but FQMS created a few turnovers to maintain a 23 - 19 advantage at the half. Catoctin hit an early 3 pointer in the 3rd quarter to take a 25 - 24 lead but FQMS came roaring back with some clutch shooting and good defense to pull away in the 4th quarter. Logan Dubbe lead FQMS with 14 points, while Davis Grove and Theo Nowlin chipped in 10 and 9 respectively. Catoctin's balanced attack was lead by Garrett Sprankle with 8 points while T.J. Rarbaugh and Michael Fairley added 6 apiece.

Folly Quarter JV defeated Catoctin 39-29. Folly Quarter built a big lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Folly Quarter was led by Nick Ball with 12 points and Jack Cook pitched in for 11 points. The defense was outstanding all game long. Catoctin had a very strong performance from Shanton with 17 points.

St Johns varsity 40 TJ 37. Leading Scorers- St Johns- Buckey Erichsen 16 Ken Wimme- 18. St Johns got off to a big first quarter lead of 16-1. TJ used aggressive defense and some good shooting to cut the lead to 10 at the half 26-16. In the second half the TJ's swarming defense continued to cut into the St Johns lead and the game was 34-30 to start the fourth quarter. St Johns played tough defense and limited TJ on the boards and came away with the win.

TJ’s JV was victorious over St Johns by a score of 38-19. The first quarter concluded with a 12-5 TJ lead. The second quarter TJ pulled away to a 26-9 halftime lead, led by Jack Atmonavage’s game leading seven points, all in the second quarter. The second half became a defensive battle with TJ taking a 12-10 edge. TJ’s strong offensive rebounding provided many second change scoring opportunities throughout the game. Saint John’s was led by William Eskay’s five points.

Crestwood Middle School defeated Windsor Knolls varsity 49 to 44. Crestwood was lead by Kevin Kidwell's 23 points and Deonte Taylor's 14 points. Garrett Rozich was the leading scorer for WKMS with 7 points and Thomas Stuart, Tucker Morgan, and Evan Schmidt each had 6. It was very close throughout the entire contest.

The Hawks tough man to man defense limited the Cavs to 6 first half points and took a 17-6 half time lead. The Hawks trip of big men, Issac Apea, Cole Burdette and Charlie Norris dominated the glass on both ends. Apea lead all scorers with 13 hard earned points in the paint. Riley Spain ran the offense and contributed 10 points on drives to the basket. Norris finished with 7, all in the second half as the Hawks pulled away for a 41-21 victory. Kyle Singer had another solid game as well as Sean and Scott Caravaggio. The Cavs were led by Kenneth Hagins with 6 and Jonah Meredith with 5.

GLENWOOD SWEEPS FOLLY QUARTER FOR SOLE POSSESSION OF PIEDMONT DIVISION LEADERSHIP - 01/19/08

In a match up of Piedmont division rivals, Glenwood varsity defeated Folly Quarter 55 to 45. The game was a tightly contested, see-saw battle of evenly matched opponents. Folly Quarter led by five at halftime and by two at the end of three quarters. Glenwood then stepped it up, converting on turnovers caused by their press and outscored Folly Quarter 24 to 12 in the final quarter. Excellent foul shooting by Glenwood (15 of 19) was also a key factor in the game's outcome. The Cobras had a balanced scoring attack with three players in double figures led by Troy Spurrier with 17 points. Paul Harris and Joe Tolbert each had 10 points, and Michael D'Ambrosio and Jeff Jacoby contributed 6 points a piece. Folly Quarter was led by Davis Grove with 13 points and Logan Dubbe with 10.

In the battle for first place in the jayvee's Piedmont division, as well as Howard County bragging rights, Glenwood defeated Folly Quarter 50 to 21 at Glenelg High School. Glenwood, coming off a 62 to 35 win at Oakdale earlier in the afternoon, came out cold but played solidly on defense and in the press as they held onto a 10 to 4 first quarter lead. That lead grew to 24 to 10 by half time behind the offensive fire power of 6th grader Robert Campanile, who came off the bench to score 10 points in the quarter. Folly Quarter was never out of it as they fought back and moved the ball well against Glenwood's press. Folly Quarter was lead by Jack Cook with 8, followed by Kevin Rosenthal and Jake Gallagher with 5 and 4 respectively. 6th graders Mikey Wynne and Russell Jarboe added 11 and 9 to Campanile's 10 to lead Glenwood.

In an exciting game at Oakdale Middle School the homestanding Eagles held on, after a late rally by visiting Glenwood, to win 37-33. The Eagles started out strong behind the solid play of Juan Retana and took a 20-10 halftime lead. The Eagles continued to play well and entered the 4th quarter up 31-18. But pressure from Glenwood and poor foul shooting by the Eagles allowed Glenwood to close the lead to 35-31 with less than two minutes to play. A few turnovers by each team and a few free throw misses by Oakdale put the game down to 24 seconds. Juan Retana went to the foul line for two shots. He made both to seal the victory. Retana led Oakdale with 16 points and three steals. Matt Myers chipped in eight points. Ben Bowman added four steals. Clay Alldredge pulled down nine rebounds. For Glenwood Jeffrey Jacoby had 14 points. Anthony Arnette scored nine points.

Oakdale and Glenwood jayvees got off to a slow start with only 12 total points being scored in the first quarter. Glenwood picked up the offensive pace in the second quarter capitalizing off steals from their aggressive full court press defense. At the end of the second quarter, it was Glenwood 30 and Oakdale 19. Glenwood kept up the defensive pressure in the third quarter and moved the ball well on offense which helped expand their lead to 46 – 31 at the end of the third quarter. Glenwood continued to work their offensive game well down the stretch and benefited from numerous Oakdale turnovers to seal the easy victory. The final score was Glenwood 62 and Oakdale 35. Gle nwood had three players in double figures. Tomi Fadiran led all scores with 16 points; Colin Randle finished with 12 points; and Russell Jarboe chipped in 11 points. Trevor O’Connor led the way for Oakdale dropping in 11 points and Luke Bartlett finished with 10 points.

Monocacy varsity beat Mt.Airy 52-47. Mt.Airy led at the end of the first quarter 10-9 and 19-18 at the half. Monocacy built a third quarter lead 38-29 with the help of inside play from Tony Dowy, who finished with eight points, all in the second half. Paul McLister and James Harris contributed nine points each for Monocacy. Down by as many as 12 in the fourth quarter Mt.Airy never quit and battled until the end. Mt.Airy was led by Nic Cimino's eight points and Gavin McTavish's 23 points.

Monocacy JV defeated Mt. Airy 57-32. Monocacy was lead by Carney Bernard and Chris Sloan with 16 points apiece. Michel Omenchenko also had an outstanding game with 11 points. Mt. Airy was lead by Jack Quinn with nine points and Jake Pooton with eight.

Middletown's varsity remained undefeated with a 34-28 win against TJ. It was an good game for start to finish, Middletown went on a 11-0 run to start the game. Then T.J. went on an 8-0 run to take the half to an 19-10 Middletown lead. Middletown was lead by Lewis with 14 points and beckner tipping in with 8; T.J. was lead by Ken Wimms with 16 points.

The Middletown JV team won a hard fought game 42-30 against the TJ Patriots. The game was tied at halftime 16-16. The Knights were led in the first half by Jack Panther who scored 10 of his game high 14 points during this time. The Knights out scored the Pats by 12 in the second half to take home the win. Rounding out the Knights scoring was Michael Kalamets with 14 and Jacob Bolton with 8. TJ was led by Juwan Addsion and Jack Atmonavage who both had 9 points.

MSD varsity 29 St Johns 28. MSD was led by James Steingieser with 8 points and 8 rebounds. Derek Frank had 7 points and Jesse Steingieser and Zack Barron added 6 points apiece. St. Johns was led by Bucky Ehrich with 7 points. AJ Kenworthy and Jackson Eskay had 6 points apiece.

MSD Javee team lost to St. John's by the score of 25 to 37. MSD team played hard and the halftime score was 16 to 17. During the second half, MSD lost its momentus. Cory Simmons and Austin Cerasoli each scored 6 points. William Eskay of St. John's led with 13 points followed by Bryan Thompson with 6 points.

Ballenger Creek varsity 90 Taneytown 24. Mark Hoy for Ballenger Creek led all scorers with 20 points Justin Brown led Taneytown with 10 points. Ballenger Creek played a very aggressive style of basketball and Taneytown just couldn't keep up.

Ballenger creek jayvee defeated Taneytown 65-23. Ryan Grant scored 14 points and Andy Shannon scored 10 points in leading a balanced Ballenger Creek attack as 12 players hit the scoring column. Bradley Schug scored 7 points while Jordan Birdsall chipped in with 5 to lead Taneytown.

In varsity action, West Frederick beat Catoctin, 63-38. West Frederick used its size and athleticism to pull out to an early lead and never looked back. West Frederick's Jalen Gee led all scores with 17 points and Nigel Feder added another 13 points. Catoctin was led by Garrett Sprankle with nine points, with Josh Laramore chipping in eight points and Darian Vandiver adding another five points. Catoctin's TJ Raubaugh led the Cougars in assists.

West Frederick used a dominating first quarter to pull away from the host Cougars and win 61-40 Saturday night in JV action. The Cadets outscored Catoctin 20-4 in the first period, led by Demorae Townsend's 7 points. Catoctin played the Cadets even in the 2nd period and Zach Jones led a strong Cougar effort in the 3rd period with 6 points. Demoae Townsend led the Cadets with 22 points, Leonard Smith and Da'ontae Diggs each scored 7 points. Alex Kennedy led all Catoctin scorers with 9 points. Jackson Steinly scored 8 points, Zach Jones added 6 points, and C.J. Jenkins chipped in 5 points.

WALKERSVILLE VARSITY TOPS MONOCACY IN TOURNEY TITLE GAME REMATCH - 01/16/08

Matthew Guyton led a balanced Walkersville offense with 9 points, and team mate Jacob Miller added 8 points and 10 rebounds as the home team Lions defeated the Mustangs of Monocacy 43 - 33. A well played game by both teams, the outcome was not decided until Jay Dennis of Walkersville (7 points) made 3 out of 4 fourth quarter free throws and the Lions ran out the clock to seal the victory. Devin Bell also had 7 points for the Lions. Monocacy was led by standout Paris Price, who outpaced all scorers with 10 points, with support from the perimeter shooting of team mate Paul McClisler who added 9 more. James Harris added 6 points with hard work in the paint for the Mustangs.

JV Monocacy 50 Walkersville 36. The Lions never overcame a slow start down 26-14 at halftime. Good penetration from Monocacy's Carney Bernard (14 points) and strong post play from Zack Petrill (14 points) proved too much for the Lions. Walkersville was led by Alex Detweiler's 18 points while Paulin Atemekeng and Jason Trott chipped in 8 points each.

ALL-SWEEP SUNDAY PACED BY ANTIETAM FOURSOME, CHESAPEAKE PAIR - 01/13/08

Middletown's Varsity remained undefeated beating a tough FQMS squad 52 - 42. The first quarter was dominated by Middletown and in particular the outstanding play of Ben Lewis who had 10 points and numerous rebounds as Middletown took at 23 - 5 lead. FQMS cut the lead in the second quarter and at half the score was 29 - 15 in favor of Middletown. Defense dominated the 3rd quarter and Middletown entered the 4th quarter with what appeared to be a comfortable lead of 36 - 21. However, FQMS converted fast breaks on a few turnovers and cut the lead at to 5 with a little over 4 minutes to play. Middletown's clutch ball handing and free throw shooting ultimately put the game away. Middletown was lead by Lewis who ended up with 14 points while Zachary Fontenot and Michael Pritts added 9 and 8 points respectively. Evan Richardson lead FQMS with 15 points (13 in the 4th quarter) while Davis Grove added 8 points.

Middletown JV beat Folly Quarter JV 51-25. Middletown came out in the first quarter and dominated with a ferocious half court press and put Folly Quarter down 37-9 at halftime. Middletown was led by Michael Kalamets, Weston Barrett and Jack Panther with 12, 10 and 8 points respectively. Folly Quarter never gave up and fought there way back to make the score respectable. Folly Quarter was led in scoring by Jake Gallagher with 7 points. Nick Ball and Brian Mobley pitched in 6 points each.

Using a mix of opportunistic rebounding and some hot free throw shooting at the very end of the game, Poolesville's Varsity erased a six-point second half deficit to beat St. Johns by a final score of 44-37. Guard Brendan Carney came up big for the Falcons. He finished with 17 points on three 3-pointers and went six-for-seven from the line. Dylan Bourque also was hitting for the Falcons from three-point land. He finished with 14 points on four three-pointers. The Vikings received a nice mix of scoring with Buckey Erickson and Jackson Eskay hitting for nine points each. Ryan Milburn chipped in six points.

St. John's JV outscored Poolesville for much of the second half but it wasn't enough to overcome a big first half Poolesville advantage as the Vikings ended up losing to the homestanding Falcons by a final score of 63-22. Poolesville was paced by Collin Turner with 11 points, Robbie Lenz with eight points, and Kirby Carmack, Eric Bannon, Niko Micheals, and Brian Dillon with six points each. Every St. Johns player landed in the scoring column with Kyle Knapp (six points) and Zach Roskowinski (four points).

The Brunswick Varsity beat MSD 34-16. After a very slow first quarter,4-2, Brunswick picked up the pace with a full court press to extend the lead at halftime 16-6. The pressure continued in the third with Brunswick taking a 16 point lead 26-10. In the forth quarter MSD cut the lead to 8 points before Brunswick finished strong to win 34-16. Dallas Darling lead a balanced Brunswick attack with 8 points and a strong effort on the boards. Stephan Hirabayashi and Blaine Price added seven. Jessie Steingeiser led MSD with 6 points.

In the JV game, Brunswick defeated MSD 53-15. Brunswick held a slim lead after the first quarter 10-8. They then jumped out to a 16-4 halftime led and never looked back. Joey Conrad led Brunswick with 15 and Chase Roberts added 10. For MSD Austin Cerasoli and Evan Kurth each had 4.

Walkersville and Linganore's varsity faced off in a defensive battle that would come down to the last minute. The first half was low scoring with Walkersville leading 14-13. came out strong in the second half to take a one point lead of their own 23-22. At that point Walkersville went on a 14-4 run to take a commanding nine point lead in the 4th quarter. The Lancers made a strong push to steal the game back and pulled within three with only a minute to go. Walkersville put the game away at the free throw line by shooting 16 for 17 to win 40-33. Zachary Wathen of Walkersville led all scores with 18. Matt Friebaum and Kyle Jennings had eight a piece for the Lancers.

The Walkersville JV Lions overcame a 6 point halftime deficit to beat the Linganore JV Lancers by a final score of 41-35. The Lions run in the 3rd quarter was keyed by the outside shooting of Alex Detweiler who had all 9 of his points in the second half. The big men for the Walkersville Lions had a strong game with Jason Trott scoring all 11 of his points in the paint or on foul shots. Perhaps the strongest player of the game, however, was Walkersville's Paulin Atemekeng who came off the bench and, displaying moves rarely seen by 7th graders, finished with 10 points. Nick Gourley led all scorers with 19 points for the Lancers.

Urbana varsity 76 - Taneytown 13. The Hawks were led in scoring by Warren Manegan with 20 points, Hunter Novotny with 17 points and 8 rebounds, Jake Hrabosky with 14 points and 4 steals. Jon Kaufman chipped in 5 points with 6 rebounds and Alex Erdman had 7 rebounds to go with his 6 points. Taneytown top scorers were Justin Brown with 4 points and Jordan Storey with 3 points.

Urbana won an out of conference jayvee game from a gritty Taneytown team 54 - 16. Josh Loveless led the Hawks with 13 points with nine coming from behind the three point line. The Hawks had ten players in the books with Micheal Aquino and Kevin Heine adding seven a piece. Taneytown was led by Jordan Birdsdall with seven points.

WKMS varsity 36 MT.Airy 35. Game was hard fought defensive battle. WKMS was paced by Justin ailstock and Ervin Liamng offensively and were guided by steady play of guards Tucker Morgan and Thomas Stuart. MT. Airy was lead in scoring by Ryan Tate and Gavin McTavish giving MT Airy the led at half and through the third quater.

The Hawks got off to a quick start scoring 22 first quarter points-led by the hot shooting of Kyle Singer with 8 first quarter points. Mt Airy fought back and trailed by 12 at the half 32-20. The Hawks played outstanding defense in the second half-holding Mt Airy scoreless in the 3rd quarter and only 4 second half points in route to a 53-24 victory. The Hawks had balanced scoring led by Singers 12, Riley Tyeryar with 10 and Sean Caravaggio with 8. Cole Burdette and Issac Apea controlled the boards and added 6 and 5 points. Riley Spain had a strong game on the defensive end with numerous steals leading to fast break opportunities for his teammates Mt Airy was led by Brandon Quinn with 6.

URBANA HANDS GLENWOOD FIRST JAYVEE SETBACK, MIDDLETOWN VARSITY GOES TO 8-0 - 01/12/08

Urbana varsity remained undefeated after handling Glenwood tonight 58-35. The contest was never in doubt with Urbana rushing out to a double digit lead early and extending that lead to 22 by half time. Urbana’s press caused Glenwood great difficulty throughout the game. Glenwood put on a small surge late, but never were able to muster up a challenge. Urbana had a balanced attack with three players in double figures lead by Kyler Rose with 14 points, and James Jaworski with 10. Glenwood was lead by Jeff Jacoby’s 9 points. Anthony Arnette added 7.

In the battle of the unbeaten jayvee teams, Urbana staged a furious 4th quarter comeback to take a 55 to 50 win at Glenelg High School. Glenwood led the entire way until surrendering the lead with 4 minutes left. Glenwood led 16 to 14 after the first quarter and 29 to 26 at the half. Glenwood entered the 4th quarter up 48 to 41 and opened up a 9 point lead before collapsing, scoring only 2 points in the 4th quarter. Crucial turnovers led to easy Urbana scores. Zach Thomas led all scorers with 23 points, including a perfect 11 of 11 from the line. Guards Darren Ambush and Jonah Loveless added 9 and 8 respectively. Glenwood was led by 6th grader Russell Jarboe with 14 followed by Tomi Fadiran with 13.

WF-Varsity 29 and Middletown 59. Middletown played an organized offensive game. There leading scorers were Ben Lewis with 18 points and Zachary Fontenot with 17 points. West Frederick’s leading scorer was Nigel Fender with 19 points.

West Frederick Cadets JV defeat the Middletown Knights 37 th 32. It was a close game the Knights were winning 23 to 16 at the half, the Cadets came back into the game with a strong offense and tied the game 27-27 in the third quarter. High scorer for the Knights was Jack Panther with 12 points, both Zachary Welch and Michael Kalamets added 6 each, while Jacob Bolton and Weston Barrett both added 4 points. High scorer for West Frederick was Demorae Townsend with 12 points,Andrew Schwemmer had 8, Trace Russ added 7 points, Michael Tetteh added 6 points and both Salveiro Sambula and Matt Hynes added 2 points each. Michael Tetteh played an outstanding defense with 27 rebounds.

Monocacy up ended Crest wood in the varsity game tonite 56 TO 51. Monocacy was lead by Paris Price with 13 points along with Paul Mclister 10 points James Harris 9 points and Michael Shvorak 9 points. Tony Dowy 10 rebound for the winners.Crest wood was lead my Deonte Taylor with 20 points along with 10 point from Taylor Hyssong.

Monocacy Jayvee defeats Crestwood 37 - 25. Carney Bernard had 16 points to lead the Mustangs. Zach Petrill added 11 points, followed by Chris Sloan eight points, and Phillip Reese two points. Crestwood was led in scoring by Theodore Johnson eight points, Jonah Meredith five points, Chad Owens three points, and Kenneth Hagins rounded out the scoring with six points. At the end of the 1st half the score was tied 11-11.

Ballenger Creek Varsity rallied in the second half to power past Catoctin, 50 to 27. Catoctin, although having a height disadvantage and three low-post players out with injury, used gritty play in the first half to keep pace with Ballenger Creek, down by only one at the half. But the larger Ballenger Creek team steadily pulled ahead in the second half, controlling the boards on both ends. Ali Azez had nine points for Ballenger Creek, leading both teams. Robbie Brady-Benzing, John Cappolella and Mark Hoy each added seven points for Ballenger Creek. The Cougars were led by Garrett Sprankle with eight points and Josh Laramore with seven. Michael Fairley, Richard Doane and Brad Little carried the load for Catoctin down low and helped keep the Cougars in the game until Ballenger Creek's run in the fourth quarter sealed their victory.

Ballenger Creek defeated host Catoctin 51-46 in JV action. Ballenger Creek used their fast-break offense and strong rebounding to build a 14 point lead, 40-26, after 3 quarters. The Cougars dominated 4th quarter play with an aggressive full-court press and timely free throw shooting, outscoring Ballenger Creek 20-11 in the final frame. Tommy Tran led the Bulldogs with 14 points, followed by Kwaveon McDonald with 12 points and Shane Davis with 8 points. Catoctin was led in scoring by Alex Kennedy with 10 points. Zach Shanton and CJ Jenkins each chipped in 8 points for the Cougars.

Poolesville beat msd jayvee 62 to 13. Poolesville's andy baker lead the team with 9 points along with kirby carmack, robbie lenz and collin turner made 8 points each. msd's cody simmons lead the team with 5 points and jake bonheyo also made 4 points for msd.

In the Varsity contest MSD lost to Poolesville 32-27. MSD was led by Derek Frank with 9 points. James Steingiser and Jesse Steinieser had 8 points a piece. Poolesville was led by Brendan Carney with 7 points and Billy Cartwright with 6 points.

T.J. varsity came with an up tempo game with an 45-40 victory for the first of the season. T.J. Was lead by Ken Wimms with 27 points and Kendle Pitts chipped in with 11 points. Mt.Airy was lead by McTavish with 15 points and Tate chipped in with 13 points it was an battle from start to finish

The Patriots JV broke into the win column with a 47-33 victory over Mt. Airy. TJ was led in scoring by Jack Atmonavage who had a game high 21 points and also had an excellent all around game. The Patriots jumped out to a 16-7 first quarter lead but a well coached Mustang team came back to only trail 24-20 at the break. TJ slowly pulled away in the second half out scoring Mt. Airy by 10 points. The Mustangs were led by Jack Quinn who had 10 points and a strong game on the boards. Rounding at the scoring for Mt. Airy was Jake Pooton with 7 points and Zach Weaver chipped in 6. TJ's other top scorers were Juwan Addison and Pablo Utrera who each had 8. Jay Molnar tossed in 5 but his defensive effort was key in the second half.

Behind strong effort and great hustle the Folly Quarter varsity defeated Oakdale 54-34. The game was never close as Folly Quarter jumped out to an 18-11 first quarter lead and increased the lead each quarter for the final 20-point victory. Michael Nicastro led FQ with 15 points. Ben Bowman led Oakdale with 13 points.

Oakdale and Folly Quarter jayvees played an exciting game with both teams showing pressure defense early. Oakdale held Folly Quarter to just two first quarter points. Folly Quarter rebounded quickly in the second quarter to get some easy baskets and get right back in the game. At the half, it was Oakdale 15 and Folly Quarter 13. The third quarter was a real defensive battle with Oakdale scoring only three points and Folly Quarter scoring just four points. Oakdale finished strong in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. The final score was Oakdale 30 and Folly Quarter 24. Oakdale was able to control the boards through much of the game with the tremendous rebounding of Payne Hebron. Hebron finished with 18 rebounds.
