BRINGING PIGGY HOME #1 Remember, this is a BIG adjustment for your piggy. You're taking her out of the only world she knows, away from mom & siblings and putting her in a new world. She will be very scared for awhile, but your patience and love will be returned with years of loyalty and enjoyment. #2 Corporal punishment does not work with pigs. It just makes them aggressive. Training with positive reenforcement of the GOOD behaviors is THE best way to train your piggy. #3 Interact with your piggy A LOT!! The more you touch, pet and talk to him, the quicker he'll adjust. Use food in your hand to bring piggy to you. Have a bed made up for him... a place he can go to to be quiet and safe without being bothered too much. They love beanbag chairs!! Some stuffed animals and a lot of blankets or towels will help him to be warm and secure! #4 Never force anything. Don't lunge or grab at your piggy. This will scare her and make it harder for her to trust you. TRUST IS #1 !!!! When you pick her up, if she squeals, don't put her down until she is quiet. If you put her down while she is squealing, this will teach her to squeal more to be let down. Just hold her very close and secure to your body to make her feel secure. #5 Don't let her outside in too big of an area, until you both feel more secure with each other. I guarantee she will always run faster than you!!! #6 If you're harness/leash training, let her wear the harness at all times so she feels it is part of her. Let her get used to the harness before attempting the leash. #7 Confine him to one area for the first week with a literbox on the opposite side of his bedding and food. If he has accidents away from the pan, put food there so he won't want to go there again. You can also put the "accident" in the literbox so the smell is where he's supposed to go. Pigs prefer to go outside. So you can housebreak as well as liter train. Take piggy out as soon as he wakes up and after each meal. About every two hours is good until he's a bit older and can "hold it" longer. Once he settles in at night, though, he'll be ok until morning. And always reward him with food ( raisins are great!!) as soon as he relieves himself outside. After awhile he will much prefer to go outside. #8 Your piglet is_________lbs. The amount of food to feed her each day is__________ cup divided in to 3 feedings. At 3-4 months of age, this can be changed to twice a day and the feed should be increased with weight according to the feed instructions. A general rule-of-thumb is to feed 3% of the body weight each day. #9 Things to occupy piggy: a) An empty soda bottle or milk jug with holes poked in it and feed inside, b) A bunch of old socks and blankets for her to root through c) a box with rocks and sticks in it with food thrown in. They also like to push around large balls, and childrens toys, like large cars, trucks etc.. as long as there are no small pieces for them to swallow. #10 If at any time you have a problem or question, please do not hesitate to call me.
